Building A Turbocharged Inline-Six Ford Mustang - Inline Is Real Fine
Here's Winterboer's 273-inch six with all the trimmings-a billet fuel rail from Classic Inlines and six 36-lb/hr injectors with vacuum sensing on all six ports. We appreciate the craftsmanship exhibited by McLearran Motorsports.
MSD provided us with 36-lb/hr injectors, which will provide plenty of fuel under heavy boost. The trick is getting our F.A.S.T. system dyno dialed in with MSD's injectors. One thing you never want under heavy boost is a lean condition. This is where knowing air/fuel mixture is important before going wide-open throttle under a load. Opt for F.A.S.T's air/fuel sensing system before going to the dyno.
Team McLearran gets Winterboer's turbo six F.A.S.T. system wired up. The F.A.S.T. processor is kept inside the car behind the firewall with a rubber insulated transition through the firewall. The system is easy to install and tune. Once it's dialed in, it's trouble free. F.A.S.T. is an outstanding system for any performance application.
Performance Distributors' D.U.I. system is available for six-cylinder applications. We appreciate the D.U.I. system for its simplicity and reliability. This is aerospace-caliber stuff when you fit it with Live Wires from Performance Distributors.
Winterboer found this low-mileage Tremec World Class T5 transmission at a local salvage yard. The fluid was clean and there was virtually no wear and tear. You can order a new Tremec T5 for around a grand-it's money well spent when you consider how rugged these gearboxes are.
Winterboer went with the Centerforce Dual-Friction clutch with its patented design, easy clutch effort, and firm grip. Because the 273ci six is internally balanced, a zero-balance flywheel was ordered.
For ease of installation and operation, Winterboer ordered a hydraulic clutch kit from JMC Motorsports. The reservoir is fastened to the firewall. The master cylinder goes in place of a Mustang's original clutch linkage.
Installed, the JMC Motorsports hydraulic clutch kit is streamlined and easy to service.
The turbo six is roughed in and good to go. We get excited by how different this engine compartment is-sizzling high-tech performance from an aluminum head, fuel-injected, turbocharged, Ford six. Here's to those who just want to be different.
Alternative Induction
This is one induction package being planned for production at Classic Inlines. Check out the large 70mm throttle body and port fuel injection. Not much was known at press time about this induction package. As soon as information becomes available, we'll bring it to you.
