Attack Of The Clones- Clones Of A Different Theme
Here's the kit to equip your '65-'66 Mustang fastback with '66 Shelby GT 350 rear quarter-windows. Tony D. Branda has them at $239 for the kit. Work slowly and carefully on the installation and you'll have good results.
One more clone favorite in the early Mustang game is the '66 Hertz Rent-a-Racer GT350. The beautiful Raven Black and gold stripe paint scheme and Magnum 500 wheels might be the best-looking combination. Did you know the Hertz cars were also later available in Candyapple Red, Wimbledon White, Ivy Green, and Sapphire Blue? That means you can make your Hertz clone in your favorite color, too.
Perhaps a better-looking trio of '67-'68 Shelby Mustangs could never be found. These three beautiful convertibles were all out for the day at the SAAC 27 event in Fontana, California. Shown are a GT350 and two GT500s. For those trying to clone a convertible, any of these three cars would be a perfect model for the project.
These are the emblem and stripe kits for the '67 Shelby Mustang. Both the GT350 and GT500 versions are shown. Each item is separate and not part of a kit.
One of the nicer choices for '67 and '68 Shelby Mustangs is this 15x7 Mag Star wheel. It was available new on Shelby cars back in the day. Check with Tony D. Branda for them at $349.95 each.
Emblems and stripe kits for the '68 model were colorful as well. There's also a stripe for the KR version of the GT500. After the paint job, you'll want all these components to look good.
The other readily available popular wheel choice is the famous Shelby 10-spoke wheel. It was also offered as an option on Shelby cars and it looks great. The complete four-wheel kit is $998.95 at Tony D. Branda.
To modify the '67 Mustang to Shelby curves, you'll need some fiberglass body components. Start at the front end with this '67 one-piece Shelby nose section. Part No. 834 at Mustangs Plus, it costs $449.95. This isn't the only piece that will need to go to the body shop along with your car.
If you're interested in what a set of Mag Star wheels look like on a Shelby GT500, here's an example. This car was a daily driver for Carroll Shelby back when the experimental car was brand-new.
Talk about looking good-here's an example of the Shelby 10-spoke wheel on a nice '68 GT500 convertible.
One of the big pieces needed to make a '67 GT350 or 500 clone is the hood. This example works for both models and should be high on your wish list. Mustangs Plus has it as PN 831, with a list price of $447.95.
This photo shows a complete grille selection for the '67 Shelby. At the top is the headlights inboard grille; it has a list price of $164.95. Some states didn't allow placement of the high beams so close together. For those, an outboard configuration was used. In the middle of the photo is the headlights outboard grille, which has a list price of $129.95. At the bottom of the photo is the covering for the lower grille opening. It costs $29.95. All three are available from Tony D. Branda.
