Classic Mustang Swaybar Install - The Low Down
Here the spring plate is lowered away from the car. In order to install the lowering blocks, we need to raise the axle off the springs. A bottle jack under the center section of the axle housing does the job.
In this picture, we remove the old axle U-bolts. These brakes are from Baer Racing. In this photo, you can see that when we raise the axle up one inch with respect to the spring, there might be interference between the spring and the parking-brake bracket.
Here, a compressed-air cut-off wheel is used to trim the parking-brake bracket. Removing a small amount of material allows enough clearance to raise the axle the required inch.
With the rear axle raised, the lowering blocks are placed into position. We painted them black so they'll hide well in the dark undercarriage of the car.
Next the new U-bolts are installed over the axle. They are more than long enough to compensate for the one-inch additional thickness added by the blocks.
Here the spring plate is back in position. Tighten the four nuts on the U-bolt ends a little at a time to prevent tilting of the spring plate. Don't tighten the fasteners too much or the shape of the plate will become distorted. Note the close proximity of the spring to the parking-brake bracket.
With the spring plate back in place, the shock absorber is now reattached to the eye in the plate.
Returning to the antisway-bar installation, the location for the one required hole in each frame-rail is carefully measured. Here, we use a right-angle drill to go through the rail on both sides.
Next, a bolt with a washer is inserted into the hole from the outside of the framerail. Attach it to the bar on the inside of the rail.
