When we adjust point gap, we are also adjusting dwell angle. The objective is to keep point gap and dwell angle constant throughout engine rpm. If you insist on using points, you need plenty of lubrication at the cam and rubbing block. You also need a nice compromise between stiff points and mild ones. Too stiff, you wear out the rubbing block and cam; too weak, the points will bounce at high revs, which causes misfire. A good rule of thumb for point gap: set them too wide, you will have misfire; set them too close, you weaken the spark intensity. View Related Article
