4 Reinforcing the stock door sheetmetal is a good option if you’re doing bodywork and metal repairs to your classic. Adding thick plate steel to the door latch area will reinforce the latch and prevent tearing from the thin door shell in an accident. You can also upgrade the simple stamped door beam in the early Mustang/Ford to a more substantial round steel tube, which will help with side impact accidents more so than the stock stamped metal “bar” in the door that is often simply just glued in place.
