According to JE's Randy Gillis, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used for both the creation of a new piston design, as well as identifying the causes of a failure during actual use. FEA identifies high stress areas, with dark blue indicating "happy zones." The color scale to the right is the key to elevated stresses, with red denoting areas of high stress.
