This is the 385-series 429ci Ford big-block. The cylinder heads are similar to the 331-series Cleveland engine family, while the block resembles a small-block Ford on steroids. At a glance, it’s a Ford V-8 through and through.

The Boss 429 was a limited-production, hemi-head big-block. Aside from displacement, this engine has little in common with the rest of the 385-series engine family.

The standard 429/460ci cylinder head sports 2.09-inch intake and 1.65-inch exhaust valves. Port sizes are 2.18x1.87-inch intake and 1.99x1.30-inch exhaust. What this means for you is healthy airflow in stock form.

The desirable Cobra Jet head (D0OE-R) yields 2.19-inch intake and 1.73-inch exhaust valves. Port size is a whopping 2.51x2.11-inch intake and 2.25x1.30-inch exhaust. If you can’t find this head, opt for the ’73-’74 Police Interceptor head (D2OE-AA, D2OE-AB, or D3AE-FA) which has the same valve and intake port size, and a slightly smaller exhaust port. That slightly smaller exhaust port improves torque.

This is the standard 429/460 block (C8VE, D0VE, or D1VE-A) with two-bolt main caps. Despite its two-bolt main status, this is a hardy block for the street warrior.

The 429 Cobra Jet block (also D0VE) has four-bolt main caps. But this cannot be determined with the oil pan installed because the Ford casting number is the same. If you’re unable to find a D0VE four-bolt main block, look for a D7TE or a D8TE 460 truck block which also has four-bolt main caps. These are more plentiful and just as durable as the older D0VE CJ/SCJ block.

All 429ci cranks are stamped with a 4U or 4UA. The longer stroke 460 crank gets a 2Y, 2YA, 2YAB, 2YABC, or a 3Y. All were cast-iron cranks except for the Boss 429, which got a steel crank.

The 429/460 connecting rod is identified by a C8VE-A, D0OE-A, D6VE-AA, or D7VE-AA forging number. The best rods are D0OE-A, D6VE-AA, or D7VE-AA. The 429 and 460 use the same rod.
