Building Up A Vintage Ford Six-Cylinder Engine

Six-cylinder engines don't get much respect in performance circles. After all, they're buzzy, down on power, and they tend to remind us of Saturday morning at the grocery store with mom when we were young. But make no mistake, Ford's old, reliable in-line

Where the humble Ford six falls short from the factory is breathing--gasp! This one-barrel, integral-with-head intake manifold is short on options. Fortunately, Clifford Performance can remedy this short-of-breath situation.

Want to improve exhaust flow? Opt for Clifford Performance's port divider for cylinders 3 and 4, which separates the exhaust pulses and makes them uniform with the other ports. Clifford says you can expect up to a 10-percent increase in torque with this modification. The port divider welds into place as shown.

Clifford exhaust headers not only improve performance, they refine sound. Single exhaust headers like these retain that buzzy harmonics in-line sixes are famous for.

However, if you want to burble the trumpets out back, opt for dual exhaust headers, which enable you to install dual exhausts. The 200 six with dual exhausts has a V-8-like throatiness at idle. Custom exhaust system fabrication is required with both headers, easily accomplished by any muffler shop.

Stepping up to two-barrel carburetion begins with the Weber 5200 two-barrel and adapter (ask for PN 08-1610). This modification alone is good for 20-30 hp, and is a bolt-on swap.

The Clifford 08-1600 adapter enables you to bolt a large Holley two-barrel to your 200 six. These Holley two-throaters flow from 280 to 650 cfm, although six cylinder owners will likely never need the 650. Optimum for street use, depending on how an engine is built, is 350 cfm. As carb size increases, we gain horsepower but lose torque. Torque is what really matters on the street.

You don't always have to spend a lot to achieve a good-looking six. We found this well-dressed engine room in Mustang, Oklahoma--chromed valve cover and air cleaner, attractive ignition wires, chromed hardware and shock tower supports. Nice work, and proof that you can dress up a six for show and go.
