Perfect Paint Basics, Part 2

Ruben Chavez has a science to his masking technique. He masks the body,then folds the tape over, as shown, to allow paint to get under theedge, which leaves no sharp edges. It becomes a smooth transition.		http://images.mustangandfords.com/techarticles/127_0401_house_7_s.jpg
With all of the basecoat black applied, Ruben lays down the Cortez BluePearl. This phase is unimpressive too. He's applying one coat of theCortez Blue Pearl. Our House of Kolor finish comes alive with clearcoat. This is House ofKolor's UFC-19 clearcoat urethane finish. KU-190 is the catalyst thathelps the clearcoat cure and harden. We mix these per the manufacturer'sdirections.

Ruben lays down the House of Kolor Kosmic Kolor clearcoat. This wraps upour door jambs and other tight detail areas. Our Mustang body will beseamless when he paints the rest of the surface.		http://images.mustangandfords.com/techarticles/127_0401_house_10_s.jpg
All of the smaller parts--like headlight doors, quarter-panel extensions,stoneguard, and valances--must be hand prepped and primed. All will bepainted as separate parts off the body. Once all dent and filler work isfinished, Ted primes these pieces. Ted loosely bolts on the quarter-panel extensions. This allows Ruben topaint them along with the rest of the body for uniformity. We do thesame thing with the headlight doors. Notice that Ted installs spacers toallow paint to get in between the extension and quarter-panel.

This time around, we reverse mask the body, covering all of the areasalready painted. Ruben folds over the edges to allow paint underneathfor proper blending.		http://images.mustangandfords.com/techarticles/127_0401_house_13_s.jpg
As with the jambs, the black basecoat and Cortez Blue Pearl come outdull. Both are applied uniformly for consistent color. These are ourcolor coats.		http://images.mustangandfords.com/techarticles/127_0401_house_14_s.jpg
Ruben applies three coats of clearcoat for a deep richness. This willgive him lots of room to color-sand and rub out the finish.

Gary's Mustang is finished, and ready for the color-sanding and rubout.At this stage, our finish has a hint of orange peel.
