After installing the pinion gear and setting pinion depth, the differential and its mounted ring gear and bearings are placed into the housing with a preliminary shim pack. Gear-marking compound is used on the ring-gear teeth, and the ring gear is inspected for the proper pattern and backlash via a dial indicator.
