For each cylinder, a special tool is used to make sure the piston ring is sitting square in the bore. Once this condition is met, the ring end gap can be accurately measured using a feeler gauge. Any required clearance adjustments can then be made. Each ring set is kept matched to the bore in which it was measured. Desired gap is 0.022 inch for the top ring and 0.020 inch for the second ring.
