The 9-inch uses a separate pinion support, and the pinion preload is set using a shim between the front and rear bearings. Strange recommends starting with a 0.032-inch shim, as most rearend builds typically fall between 0.030 and 0.034 inch. Don't install the pinion-support oil seal at this time as it will affect the bearing preload reading. View Related Article
