1996 Ford Mustang GT - Project Red Headed Step Child
America's most unloved modular Mustang, the '96.
Project Name: Redheaded Step Child
Car: 1996 Ford Mustang GT
Timeline: May 2005-Present
Goal: Build a 300-rwhp, naturally aspirated non-PI-headed 4.6 Mustang.
Result: To Be Determined.
Grade: Project not finished yet.
Best performance: 355 flywheel horsepower/364 lb-ft of torque to date.
Biggest mistake: None yet.
Best move: Too soon to tell.
Was it difficult? Sure, coaxing this kind of power from the pathetic non-PI motor took every trick in the book. Would we recommend this route to our readers with '96-'98 Mustangs? Probably not, unless (like us) they are looking to prove a point. It would make much more sense (and power) to simply equip the engine bay with the later PI components, the most important of which would be the PI cylinder heads.
