Project Large Marge: Installing Rack & Pinion Steering into a 1973 Mustang
Project Large Marge gets a Total Control rack & pinion steering system, after some slight modifications to the car
It’s been awhile since we last checked in on Project Large Marge, Jason Lewis’s 1973 Mustang coupe, but here’s the latest technical installation video on the project. This ’73 coupe is being turned into a competent and fun ride for the occasional track day in addition to waging war in the asphalt jungle known as the Southern California freeway system, so it needs to perform great but more importantly, do it reliably.
To that end, Jason has been in the process of using all the Chris Alston’s Chassisworks’ Total Control Products suspension bits, and for this video he added the company’s new rack and pinion steering kit to the car, for more precise steering control and road feel. Total Control didn’t make a kit specifically for the ’71-’73 Mustangs, but working with Jason they developed a pieces to adapt their standard rack to the ’73, and you can buy these pieces to upgrade your big-body Mustang.
It does require some mild fabrication skills to complete this install. You'll have to cut the lower crossmember and weld in a few mounting plates, but if you check out the video you'll find it to be a fairly straightforward affair. Jason even runs through the complete install and connection of the TCP rack and pinion splined steering input shaft to the Flaming River tilt steering column’s ¾-inch DD shaft using billet universal joints.
There's still more to do since the engine isn't in the car yet. We'll have to run plumbing from the steering pump to the rack and pinion unit and will also install a line pressure regulator to dial in the pressure. Jason said, “This is a really big deal for the build up of this car, since the suspension is such high quality parts, it made sense to finish off the steering with modern technology as well. Check out the ET Wheels and how I'm dialing in the stance of the car...it's getting close. An inch down in the front or an inch up in the rear should just about do it.”
