1965 Mustang Tames the Tail of the Dragon
Project Road Warrior takes a detour on the way home from the SEMA Show
Our Project Road Warrior 1965 Mustang coupe’s maiden voyage, barely after starting for the first time, was to hit the road from South Carolina all the way to Las Vegas for the 2015 SEMA Show. That trip happened with minimum drama and the trip home was equally uneventful until we realized we were near the Tail of the Dragon, Route 129 on the Tennessee/North Carolina border. This spectacular road packs 318 curves in 11 miles, and is heaven for fast cars and sport bikes.
A lot of people would just stay on the highway and get to their destination, usually home, but I prefer the road less traveled because you never know what you will find. The detour off the normal route and onto the Tail of the Dragon added about four hours and over 200 miles of winding roads to our 2,200-mile, 3-day journey, but luckily our co-pilot Amie Williams let us run nuts and didn’t complain at all when we stayed heading west and not south like the GPS kept instructing us.
The song was chosen specifically for this drive: Two Paths by Fish out of Water.
