United States citizens have rights and freedoms that some others in far-flung countries do not have-such as freedom of speech and free press. We car-crazy members of society have other freedoms as well. We can own and drive just about any type of vehicle we want, from scooters to blown eight-second Mustangs. We can modify them (within reason) and blow on wild paint and trick wheels, too.

Customizing our cars and trucks to fit our personalities is a cornerstone of the American lifestyle, and it's a hobby many of us have embraced wholeheartedly. Customizing or personalizing can include building insane horsepower as well as adding ground effects and other slick body parts. Whether you own a Fox-body, an SN-95 Stang, or you just picked up a retro-styled Pony from your local dealer, the possibilities are endless.

Since the first Fox graced the streets in 1979, we have been able to enhance styling with cowl hoods, whale tails, and swoopy side skirts. Today, there are hundreds of body parts and kits from which to choose. We know it can be difficult to decide what to install, so we've done some of the hard work for you. Now sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

3dCarbon

3dCarbon offers different kits and body parts for '05-and-up Mustangs. Each kit is made of polyurethane, and there are three different versions to choose from based on owner preference and vehicle powerplant options.

The 10-piece Boy Racer kit has everything needed to turn a stock '05 Mustang into a look-the-part road race car. This kit comes complete with front fascia, side skirts and door caps, four fender flares, and a rear bumper replacement.

While the Boy Racer is the top-of-the-line kit from 3dCarbon, the GT kit is a subtle yet head-turning four-piece kit available only for GT Mustangs. The pieces of the kit, including front and rear bumpers and side skirts, are also available separately.

Not to exclude the V-6 folks, 3dCarbon also has a body kit for six-cylinder Stangs that comes either as a four-, five- or eight-piece kit. Any one of these variations of the V-6 kit will turn a stock six-cylinder Mustang into a hot-looking ride. Like the GT kit, the pieces in the V-6 kit are available separately.

Not included in the kits are the hoods, rear wings, and other items which are offered separately. In addition to the hood and the two types of rear wings (Mach 3 and ducktail), other items, such as quarter-panel scoops, rear quarter-window louvers, and rear-window "U" trim are available.

Black Widow Enterprises

Black Widow Enterprises offers a variety of kits, spoilers, and other body pieces for '94-'04 Stangs. All kits are four-piece ensembles that come with a front bumper, a rear bumper, and side skirts.

The '94-'98 kit is made from fiberglass. All pieces are available separately, and with this kit, the replacement foglight kit is needed.

The '99-'04 kit offers a host of options. Again, the pieces are available separately, and the kit can be ordered either in fiberglass or in urethane. The Cobra-specific kit uses the stock Cobra foglights. For non-Cobra cars, the kit comes either in fiberglass or urethane, and you'll need the replacement foglight kit.

Complementing Black Widow's kits are the rear wing and Ram Air 3 hood. The rear wing is made out of plastic, while the hood is made out of fiberglass.

Blow-By Racing

With the new Mustang evoking memories of the vintage Stangs of yesteryear, Blow-By Racing has developed a kit that will turn the brand-new Mustang into a modern-day version of an old GT500.

The complete 12-piece kit includes a hood, a front bumper, side skirts, sidescoops for the quarter-panel, rear-quarter window scoops, a three-piece rear spoiler, and a rear bumper. Some parts are sold separately. The bumpers are made of urethane, while the rest of the kit is made out of fiberglass.

California Mustang

California Mustang and its subsidiary Web site, Ponybuilder.com, offer Mustang enthusiasts numerous body kits, hoods, wings, and a way to see what the parts look like before purchase. California Mustang is a dealer for Street Scene Equipment, 3dCarbon, Steeda, and Saleen, so you can purchase any of those kits instead of having to go directly to the manufacturer. The company also offers fiber-glass hoods for all late-model years. With the Ponybuilder.com Web site, Mustang owners can see what their car will look like with California Mustang's body parts on it. Cervini's Auto Designs

Cervini's Auto Designs has been a leader in the body kit industry for years, and it has many offerings for a variety of late-model Ford vehicles. There are body kits for the new Mustang as well as for the Fox-body and '94-'04 SN-95 body styles. Cervini's two most popular body kits are the C-Series kit for the '05 Mustang and the Stalker body kit for '94-'04 Mustangs.

The C-Series kit makes the new Mustang look hot! It has 15 pieces that include a hood, a front bumper, upper and lower billet grilles, PIAA upper and lower foglights with bezels, a functional after-cat side-exit exhaust with side skirts, a rear bumper, a pair of quarter-panel and rear quarter-window scoops, and a ducktail rear wing. The kit includes a fiberglass hood with the rest being urethane, and the pieces are available separately.

If you're a '94-'04 Mustang aficionado, the Stalker body kit is right up your alley. The 10-piece kit features a fiberglass wing and hood with urethane body parts, including the front bumper, rear bumper, side skirts, quarter-panel sidescoops, and sidescoop door moldings. If you have a '94-'98 Stang, you can choose either a Cobra R, a cowl induction, or a ram air hood, while the '99-'04 group can choose the ram air or Cobra R hood.

Classic Design Concepts

Classic Design Concepts (CDC) offers the latest in body add-ons for the new Mustang as well as the '94-'04 models. While the com-pany doesn't have a dedicated body kit, it does have individual pieces that will add eye candy to your ride.

CDC offers a chin spoiler that comes either in a classic style or an aggressive style. Add the chin spoiler to CDC's C-pillar scoops, smooth hoodscoop, and blow-molded ABS plastic, three-piece ducktail rear spoiler, and an '05 Mustang will look nothing but hot.

CDC also offers body enhancements for your Stang. Both quarter-panel sidescoops and a Cobra R hood can be had for the '94-'98 body style. One of CDC's best-selling products is the Shaker package for the '99-'04 and '05 Mustangs. The package for the '99-'04 body style turns your GT or V-6 into a Mach 1 as it features the CDC Shaker system, trim panels, chin spoiler, grille eliminator, and Mach 1 side graphics.

Extreme Dimensions

It would take most of this issue to list the numerous body kits that Extreme Dimen-sions offers for '87-'05 Mustangs. Four of its more popular body kits are the Hot Wheels Widebody kit and Racer kit for the '05 Mustang, the Colt kit for model years '87 through '04, and the Evo 5 body kit for the '94-'98 cars.

The nine-piece Hot Wheels Widebody kit includes a front bumper, side skirts, rear bumper, front fenders, rear fender flares, and rear wing, all made out of fiberglass.

The four-piece Racer kit for the '05 Mustang is also a trick-looking piece, and includes a front lip spoiler, a rear lip, and a pair of side skirts. Like the Widebody kit, the Racer is also made out of fiberglass. Unlike the Widebody, however, each piece is available separately.

One of Extreme Dimensions' more versatile kits is the Colt, which is offered for the '99-'04, '94-'98, and '87-'93 models. The Colt kit is made out of fiberglass, and comes as a four-piece kit with side skirts and front and rear bumpers. The minor difference in the kit comes with the '94-'98 version, which is offered with matching door caps, making it a six-piece kit.

If you're going for a European-type look for your '94-'98 Stang, then the Evo 5 kit is for you. The unique front bumper is a perfect place in which to hook up some huge foglights. The kit also comes with Vader-type side skirts and a rear bumper. Made of fiberglass.

Fang Performance

If you're looking to give your new Mustang some teeth, then Fang Performance has three awesome appearance packages and a few side items that will make your car bite in a good way.

Fang has the Mystery 7 package, which is a four-piece kit shipped with a hood, end caps, trunk lid, and front fender eyebrows. The hood has a neat-looking scoop on it, while the trunk lid is a one-piece item with the rear spoiler already attached. The two end caps complete the spoiler, and the eyebrows give the front end a longer look.

Stepping up is the Mystery 8 kit that comes with a front fascia, a fully functional ram-air-style hood, and a complete trunk lid/spoiler combination with end caps. The kit was made available this summer, and, like the Mystery 7 kit, gives the new Stang a racy look. At the time of press, pricing for both the Mystery 7 and Mystery 8 kits were not available, so check out Fang Performance's Web site or call to find out how much each kit costs.

Fang's Street Pak kit is an appearance package that also gives a little bit of go power. The kit comes complete with hood, front spoiler, upgraded wheels and tires, leather interior with Fang Performance-embroidered floor mats, a Fang ram-air box, new mufflers, and a rear fin-type spoiler. According to Fang, portions of the package may be added or deleted to suit individual needs, so if you just want the look and not the sound or performance, Fang will make the appropriate changes. As is the case with the Mystery kits, pricing wasn't available, so call the company for an exact price tag for the kit.

In addition to the kits, Fang also offers a front chin spoiler, a rear ducktail-style spoiler that comes with provisions for the upper third brakelight, and a Shaker hood package. The Shaker package comes with a spear-type hood complete with a '99-'04 Mach 1-style Shaker scoop.

Another popular body kit by Ground Dynamics is the Striker kit, which is available for the '94-'98 and '99-'04 body styles. Roush Performance

Realizing this, Roush Performance has made it easy on the performance world by offering the same Roush body kits that it bolt ons to its specially tuned Mustangs for V-6 and GT cars.

The six-piece '99-'04 kit will make the SN-95 into a Roush look-alike. Included is a front fascia kit, side skirts, a rear valance, and a wing with pedestals. When it comes to performance, the words Mustang and Saleen are synony-mous. Saleen offers its body kits to those who want the look but don't want the hassle of explaining to the wife why the second mortgage was taken out to finance the car and not the house repairs.

Accessorize Your Ride

OK, you bought the body kit for your Mustang and had your local auto body shop paint it to match. It's bolted on and your ride is looking sweet. Now what do you do?

While the body kit added muscle and certainly enhanced the visual appeal of the car, your machine just isn't reaching its potential due to those stock wheels and the drab factory interior.

To take your Stallion or other fast Ford to the limit, you'll need to add a few extra pieces-in other words, it's time to accessorize your ride. Going all the way is what we live for in this hobby, and the MM&FF staff is always on the lookout for the greatest parts to make your machine shine better than the rest or outrun them on the track. And since we put together a huge body kit buyer's guide for this issue, what better than a story on finding the right accessories to complete the package? So here are just a few of the thousands of possible items that will help you dress up your ride for a night on the town.

Classic Design Concepts

Classic Design Concepts, or CDC, has numerous items to complement its body kit pieces. If you're the owner of an '05-and-newer drop-top Stang, CDC's lightbar is a great addition that is functional, visually appealing. Also available is a honeycomb rear trim panel for the SN-95 cars that comes either in the classic GT or the Mach 1 style. While you're at the back of your ponycar, don't forget CDC's Detail Corral. Designed for the brand-new S197 Mustangs, the Detail Corral offers you storage space for cleaning supplies and other stuff you need. The best part is, it stays neatly contained instead of being thrown all around the trunk when you whip around a corner.

CDC can help dress up your car's interior with its cast aluminum T-handle shifter knob and interior trim package. The shifter knob is available for '99-'04 models, and comes with either a Mach 1, running pony, Bullitt, Cobra, or CDC-style emblem engraved on it. The trim package is an all-inclusive kit that features pedals, locks, shifter knob, and trim ring. The kit is based off the styling found in the '03-'04 Mach 1s. Call CDC for the kit specific for your year Mustang.

CJ makes looking at that marvelous piece of engineering known as the mod motor easier by offering Ford Racing's billet oil cap. Moving into the interior, CJ retails the Steeda-machined A/C knobs for the new S197 Mustang for $39.95 as well. For the '99-'04 crowd, CJ has the lettering to fill in the "Mustang" embossed in the rear bumper. Late Model Restoration

Late Model Restoration has a lot of offerings in regards to restoring, as their name implies, later-model Mustangs. The company also has a few products that fit quite well into this buyer's guide. For those '99-'04 Mustang owners who aren't one of the lucky ones to hold a pink slip to a Mach 1, Late Model has a grille-delete kit that will turn your V-6 or GT Stang partway into one. The kit gets rid of the honeycomb grille, leaving only the pony emblem. Late Model also has a fender gripper trunk mat for '99-'04 Mustangs. The mat is designed to keep items placed on the trunk floor in place while driving.

There are items for the new Mustang, too. You can put clear LED taillights on your '05 Stang, or dress up your side mirrors by adding chrome mirror overlays. The really cool product offered for the new Stang is the push-button starter kit. Designed for both V-6 and GT models, the kit fits in the center power port, and looks cool as well as factory.

If lighting is what you are looking for, then Mr. Bodykit has it. Mustang owners of all years can illuminate the undercarriage with the Plasmaglow LED underbody kit. The company also has a trick, lighted doorsill. Designed for '94-'04 Mustangs, the sill can be ordered to read "Mustang" or "SVT Cobra" in either red or blue. Mustang Tuning

Mustang Tuning not only offers performance parts to tune your powerplant, but parts to tune your Mustang's appearance as well. Adding gauges to a Mustang and doing it cleanly is one road most Mustang owners try to go down, and Mustang Tuning makes it easy to add gauges to the '05 Mustang without making it look like a race car. The dual gauge pod is placed on top of the dash above the radio, and can house three 2 1/16-inch gauges. The company also offers its Auto Meter instrument gauge cluster for '99-'02 Stangs. Weld Wheel Industries

Many late-model Mustang owners often run into problems when fitting drag wheels and tires on their rides. Most drag wheels use a 15-inch diameter, which sometimes isn't enough for cars with bigger brakes like Sexton's '99 Cobra. However, use of spacers and a little grinding of the brake calipers can sometimes get them to fit. Up front, Sexton bolted on this Weld Racing Aluma Star using a 25mm spacer and knocked the calipers down a bit with a grinder. He noted that a 30mm spacer would have prevented grinding, but it all depends on how you want the wheel to sit in the well.

Mark Sexton had to cope with the added issue of the IRS rear in his '99 Cobra. He fit this 15x8 Aluma Star by grinding a bit off of the spindle near the tie-rod end, as well as shaving some of the rear calipers. While grinding can possibly weaken the metal structures themselves, many have done this with great success.

S197 Wheels For your Fox

FRPP offers several wheels for '05-'06 Mustangs. From left to right are the 17x8 Bullitt-style, the 18x8.5 Optional GT wheel, and the 18x8.5 Bullitt-style wheel.

Bolting SN-95 wheels to Fox-body Mustangs is nothing new, but some have now tried it with the S197 Mustang wheels. The extra offset of the S197 wheels is especially helpful in SN-95 rear disc or 2300-K kit applications as it tucks the wheels/tires under the fender for a more factory appearance. While Ford Racing Performance Parts still offers the Cobra R disc-brake conversion for Fox Mustangs, it no longer carries the special offset Cobra R wheels.

We found the S197 wheels to fit better than the SN-95 rims, which have a tendency to stick out a bit too far. If you plan to use the SN-95 rims, we suggest getting a set of rear caliper relocation brackets from North Race Cars, which will allow you to run stock-length axles, thus bringing the wheels under the fender lips.

The rear disc brake upgrade and SN-95-length axles forced out our Fittipaldi 17x8.5 wheels far enough to rub the fenders.

If you want to keep the brand-new axles that came with your 2300-K disc brake upgrade, then the S197 wheels are for you. We decided to try out a few of FRPP's wheels for looks and to see how the different backspacings fit on our Cobra R disc brake-equipped ProCharged Pony Fox Mustang.

The optional 18x8.5 wheel with its 6.29-inch backspacing just doesn't offer enough back-spacing for the Fox, at least in the rear. Up front, the 8.5-inch wheel was dangerously close to the front strut, so on to the next wheel.

We had hoped the 18x8.5-inch Bullitt-style wheel would fit, as we liked the extended spoke look over the 17s, but it was not to be. With their 6.82-inch backspacing, these hit the front strut, and both 18s rubbed the rear of the lower control arm up front.

The 17x8s were the winners with their 8-inch width and 6.29-inch backspacing. At $140 each, they're quite reasonable, and they clear the front struts as well as the rear quarter-panel lip.
