Went to Watch and Ended Up Behind the Wheel
In the 8 years since the inaugural NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing was held at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Illinios, the event really has grown to be one of the premier showdowns for racers in both sanctions.
I made a trip out to Chicagoland this year (2013, for those who read this blog 10 years from now), to see the event and catch up with some of my good friends, and also to meet some of you--folks who read 5.0 Mustang and Super Fords--who made it a point to say hello if you saw me in the stands or cruising thorough the pits.
While taking in the Super Bowl action was my primary objective, there was NO WAY I was going to pass up a great offer from NMRA Modular Muscle racer, Dave Whitt.
No, Dave didn't toss me the keys to his brand-new Cobra Jet clone (#51 build by Dyno Joe Cram of Houston, Texas). Since the CJ was towed to the track, Dave and his sister made the trip from Houston to Joliet in his brand-spankin'-new Boss 302 Mustang.
The car was parked in the Dyno Joe pit when I stopped by, and after hearing that it belonged to Dave and other basic chit-chat, I was asked if I "wanted to use it" to compete in a class at the Super Bowl. Whoa!
Tremec True Street was the best fit for this occasion, so I entered and had a chance to spend three days with an awesome, and did I mention, BRAND-NEW (there were only 8,000 miles on the odometer--and a good chunk of them were racked up on Dave's drive from Texas to Illinois) Boss 302 'Stang.
Unfortunately, the whole True Street effort didn't end with me winning any of the ET categories. Poor traction and even poorer shifting during the 3 dragstrip passes had me running 13s and 14s (at 110 mph) in the car, and finishing with a 2nd-place average...in the 14-second bracket (14.107 the winner was 14.013 or something like that). Absolutely horrible for such a wonderful car, but I really did have a LOT of fun with it.
Here are a few pics of the bad Boss. I definitely had a great time at the 'Bowl!
