We review TMI Products Cobra Sport Seat Upgrade.
Recently, we got to tinkering on a ’98 Cobra Mustang here at our Tampa headquarters. It sports just under 100,000 miles and is 16 years old. Your author picked up this ride nearly one year ago, and it was in modest to fair condition. The interior was surprisingly in good shape, but was faded due to the sun, and looked like it belonged in the 90s. Truth be told… it was outdated.
We here at MM&FF are always looking for the next big thing, and we figured, why not give the interior of our beloved Snake an overhaul. We tossed around a few ideas; do we just install a set of race seats and call it a day, or should we go the next step and do the whole interior? Well, normal isn’t OK and a race seat wouldn’t cut it, so we contacted our friends over at TMI Products to lead us in the right direction.
TMI has been in business for over 30 years, specializing in high-quality interior components. Having first started its Ford line up with classic Mustang upholstery, it has just recently branched out into the late-model market. With that, success has followed and TMI has now introduced its reproduction ’03-’04 Cobra seat upholstery.
“It was an obvious route for TMI to take after offering the stock GT seats, as I can easily say that the ’03-’04 Terminator Cobra seat is one of the most sought after seats that was ever available in a Mustang,” said Waylon Krumrie, sales manager for TMI Products. “We then found out that all Mustangs from ’99-’04 share the same seat frame, and that any V6 or GT seat could be stripped down to the frame and built into a premium Cobra, Bullitt, or Mach 1 seat using only new foams and upholstery.”
Your author has a certain fondess for Terminator cars, and absolutely loves the ’03-’04 Cobra seats. When we fond out about TMI’s reproduction seats, we had to have a set. Now, I won’t go into to much detail, as we have a story coming out shortly in our October issue of the install, but what I will tell you is the look and fitment is an exact copy of the originals.
This was your author’s first attempt at interior upholstery, and it was a bit intimidating at first, but once we started, I am happy to inform you as a reader, there’s nothing to be afraid of. Yes, it’s a little tedious when it comes to installing the seat covers and inserting the hog rings into place, but it wasn’t all that bad. In fact, anyone interested in doing this install can do it in one day.
Now here’s the catch. For the pre-1999 Mustang owners, if you’re looking to do this upgrade, you’ll need to find a full set of ’99-’04 Mustang seats. As mentioned before, the seat frames for these years are identical to the ’03-’04 Cobras. If you’re like your author, we had to purchase a set. We contacted MPS Autosalvage out of Statham, Georgia, for our needs. If you’re fortunate enough to own a ’99 or newer Stang, then don’t fret.
