I love Mustangs as much as the next 5.0&SF reader, but I appreciate the cars so much that when my commute went from 10 miles to 70 miles a day, I decided I didn’t want to subject my ’Stangs to that grind. A non-Mustang daily was in order.

After a rough patch in April, I found myself in need of a new daily. I stewed for a while about throwing caution to the wind and adding a third Mustang to the driveway. I considered KJ’s Cheaper Sleeper approach, or even a used Coyote, but instead I chose a ’13 Focus ST. Having recently driven the little turbo hatch from Michigan to Florida, I knew it had the right balance of fun, fuel, economy, flexibility, and stealth to make an ideal daily ride—at least until I get an eyeball on that S550 Mustang...

For me, a daily must not only be practical, it needs to be fun too. Driving a car devoid of personality just isn’t for me. So even though the ST is a hoot to drive in stock form, any car needs a few mods to sharpen its edges and bring out its charm.

So, before I head down that path, I snapped a few shots of the car in stock form.

Since handling springs are part of the plan, a shot showing the stock ride height was crucial. Likewise, a new cold-air intake is on the roster, so a stock engine shot is a must. The other shots are merely to document what the car looks like when it’s still pretty new. As it sits it has a little over 1,300 miles. 

Now it’s off to South Florida for Project Silver Lining's first round of modifications at Steeda Autosports, which offers a robust line of gear for these cars. So stay tuned for a series on web stories on installing these parts, and don’t worry, this is just a brief diversion from the steady stream of Mustang stories.
