Ford Celebrates 10 Millionth Mustang With Custom Convertible
A day of celebration that featured a Mustang from every model year
Ford’s Mustang has been racking up the sales for over 50 years. While we’re sure Ford would love to sell over a million Mustang in less than two years, just like it did back in 1965-1966, there’s no denying that the Mustang has had respectable numbers throughout each of the six major redesigns/generations. Respectable enough for Ford to call it the best-selling sports car of the last 50 years anyway. Sports car to some, daily transportation to school or work for others—that’s the way the Mustang has been marketed for five decades now and there’s no doubt that marketing has worked. There’s no other nameplate on the road today that has quite the universal appeal as the Mustang. The Mustang has been featured in more movies and has more Facebook followers than any other vehicle in the world!
So today, as Ford marks the 10 millionth Mustang built with fanfare that started at its World Headquarters and moved to its Flat Rock Assembly Plant via police escort, more than 60 Mustang owners joined Ford by bringing their Mustangs out for the special display. The display showcased Mustangs from every year of production; from the original first gen classic Mustangs of the ’60s through the Fox era and into the current generation S550. There was certainly something for everyone to enjoy and reminisce about, including such notable cars as the original Bullitt Mustang, Mustang VIN #1, the first Mustang sold to the public, Mustang-based race cars, and even a trio of P-51 Mustangs that took to the air for a ceremonial fly over!
The 10 millionth Mustang Ford built to celebrate the occasion is a one off 2019 Wimbledon White GT convertible with 460 hp 5.0L Coyote V-8, six-speed manual transmission equipped with the latest driver assist technology. The first serialized Mustang (VIN 001) produced in 1964 was the same color and model with a three-speed manual transmission and 164 horsepower V8.
“Mustang is the heart and soul of this company and a favorite around the world,” said Jim Farley, president of global markets, Ford Motor Company. “I get the same thrill seeing a Mustang roll down a street in Detroit, London, or Beijing, that I felt when I bought my first car–a 1966 Mustang coupe that I drove across the country as a teenager. Mustang is a smile-maker in any language.”
While the Mustang is currently built solely in the Flat Rock Assembly Plant, prior to that the Mustang was built at three plants, including Dearborn, MI; San Jose, CA; and Metuchen, N.J in order to keep up with demand for the hot selling long hood/short deck styling the Mustang became known for.
The 2019 Mustang offers the latest technology, exhilarating performance and more personalization than ever. All 2019 Mustang GT 5.0L V-8 models with manual transmissions offer rev-matching downshifts with the six-speed, while EcoBoost gets an optional quad-tip fully active exhaust. All-new custom-tuned 1,000-watt B&O Play high-performance sound system and available Apple CarPlay compatibility for Ford+Alexa and Waze via SYNC 3 will satisfy audiophiles and smart phone users alike.
