Quick Drive: The 2018 Ford EcoSport
A few laps in Ford’s new crossover
During a recent trip to the Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach auction we had the opportunity, just like any auction attendee, to visit the Ford display and go for a drive in Ford’s latest vehicle offerings. The display and driving experience is something Ford has been doing for several years now after stepping up its involvement with the Barrett-Jackson auction company.
At the Palm Beach auction the vehicles, production cars and trucks supplied by local Ford dealers, you had the option of driving pretty much anything Ford offers today, albeit nothing of a performance slant like a Fusion Sport, Taurus SHO, or Ford Shelby GT350. However, if you’re looking for a new daily, that first new college commuter for your kid, or a SUV or crossover for the wife, it’s a great way to enjoy a basic test drive without the hassle and drama of going to the dealership.
The vehicle that stood out to us the most was Ford’s new small crossover, the EcoSport. We’ve been eying this new ride as a fun daily that is capable of hauling some gear when needed so we grabbed the keys and hit the test drive track. The model we drove was an SE (EcoSport is available in S, SE, SES, and Titanium trim levels). The EcoSport SE is powered by a 1.0L EcoBoost engine and comes with a six-speed automatic. The Blue Candy Metallic exterior was paired with a black cloth interior and our tester featured all the modern bells and whistles we’ve become accustomed to, including power driver’s seat, push button start, fold down second row seating, a sunroof, electronic air conditioning, and more for just a tick over $24,000 sticker!
The 1.0L EcoBoost felt peppy enough on our ride, but if you really want to move out then consider stepping up to the SES model with AWD and the larger 2.0L Ti-VCT direct injected four-cylinder. The ride was quiet and comfortable and the dash/steering controls were easy to use. The fold down seats and side opening rear door allow for plenty of storage when you have to hit the home improvement store or want to take a weekend away to refresh and recharge your batteries. Stop by your local Ford dealer and take a look at one, you’ll be pleasantly surprised! We certainly were!
