Shortly after the debut of its all-new 2017 Shelby F-150 Super Snake truck to the media at Carroll Shelby International’s Gardena, California location the cover was lifted off of Shelby American’s 2017 Shelby Super Snake wide body concept vehicle as well. The concept, the first of its kind from Shelby American in over a decade, includes updates to the vehicle’s suspension, brakes, tire package, wheels, and more to take full advantage of the wide body kit’s wider track allowance for road racing use, yet still be fully street legal.

“Shelby American has been pushing the performance envelope since 1962,” said Joe Conway, Co-CEO of Carroll Shelby International and CEO of Shelby American. “The success of our 50th Anniversary Shelby Super Snake, Shelby F-150, and Shelby Cobra programs has fueled a desire to stretch our team in new ways. The wide body Shelby Super Snake concept vehicle is a glimpse at our next generation track focused car, as well as a demonstration of Shelby American’s vitality.”

The 2017 Shelby Super Snake Wide Body concept will stick around for this weekend’s 5th Annual Carroll Shelby Tribute & Car Show on May 20, 2017, which is being held at the same Gardena, California location. There it will be officially unveiled to the show going public, alongside the new Shelby F-150 Super Snake truck.

“Shelby American’s wide body option for the previous generation Super Snake was very popular because it put more rubber under the car to improve traction for drag racing,” said Gary Patterson, Shelby American President. “The current Shelby Super Snake emphasizes handling much more than the last model, which required a new approach with this concept. Instead of being optimized for straight line performance, the Super Snake wide body concept provides more grip on all four corners. It was designed to give drivers a serious competitive edge on the road course.”

Beginning with a 50th Anniversary Shelby Super Snake, which features a 750hp supercharged Coyote 5.0L V-8, Shelby American updated the vehicle for wide body status with a fully adjustable coilover suspension system, bigger brakes, hardened wheel studs at all four corners, stronger spindles and hubs, as well as a more aggressive wheel and tire package. These pieces, combined with the additional tire contact patch at all four corners allow the wide body concept to easily put all 750 horsepower to the ground.

“Adding approximately four inches to the car’s rear track and two and half to the front, opened up new opportunities to maximize handling,” said Vince LaViolette, Shelby American Vice President of Operations and Chief Test Driver. “The fully adjustable coilover suspension and the enormous Brembo braking system, along with wider wheels and tires significantly change the car’s driving dynamics. This provides more grip for later braking and earlier acceleration out of corners. It will deliver more communication to the driver and better absorb track imperfections. The wide body Super Snake concept is every road racer’s dream.”

The “Lightning Blue” Shelby Super Snake concept includes:

Performance equipment
-Shelby-spec track suspension
-Rear lower control arms

-Brembo Shelby brake system with 16-inch rotors and six piston calipers in the front and 14-inch rotors and four piston calipers in the rear
