GMP Diecast Announces 1990 Limited Edition “7-Up” Diecast
1990 Limited Edition 7-Up Mustang Diecast: GMP launches another awesome Fox body diecast for us enthusiasts
If you’re a Fox Mustang enthusiast you have no doubt heard the famous story of the stillborn 7-Up Mustang promotion that stuck Ford with just over 4,000 of these special Emerald Green 5.0L LX convertibles. For those just tuning in, the promotion with 7-Up Bottling Company was to give away 30 of these cars at the 1990 NCAA basketball finals. In an audience participation contest, anyone sinking a basket from center court with one try was to drive home in one of the cars. At the last minute, the contest was canceled. Today you will find owners of these rare Limited Edition convertibles with marketing materials from the time period, including 2-liter 7-Up bottles with the contest on the bottle wrap, and more.
Ford built 4,103 of these cars, all with Emerald Green Metallic paint, an all-white leather interior (not white and gray like the standard white-interior option), and a white top. Even though it was an LX-based model, Ford skipped the factory LX 10-hole wheels and added the GT Turbine wheels for a unique look. These cars stood out from the rest of the 5.0L Mustangs of the day with their color-matched side moldings and mirrors, giving a cleaner look that was a sign of things to come on following models in the 1992 production year.
