Manley Performance Celebrates 50 Years in Business
Performance valves, connecting rods, and more have put Manley squarely on the map
If you’ve ever built an engine or been around a machine shop you’ve no doubt heard or seen the Manley Performance name. Manley is one of the biggest manufacturers of performance valvetrain parts and is used in everything from performance street engine builds to professional racing engines in just about every arena—circle track, NASCAR, drag racing, monster trucks, et al. You’ll often find car enthusiasts have Manley stickers on their tool boxes along with other big names in the performance aftermarket.
Hank Manley started Manley Performance in 1966 when he decided to depart his family’s OEM replacement valve business and embark on a career of his own manufacturing high performance products. Now, some 50 years later, Manley Performance has grown to become an internationally recognized manufacturer of premium internal engine components.
Performance valves in several materials are the company’s bread and butter. These now include five different models of one-piece stainless steel valves, plus titanium. Manley’s other product lines include Platinum Series forged aluminum pistons, which are designed to provide premium features and quality at popular prices. Crankshafts are a fairly recent addition, but fall right in place with its line of forged steel connecting rods (that Ford has used in OEM applications) and the NexTek series of valve springs are other major attractions to the line.
In 1988 Manley Performance relocated to a new purpose-built facility in Lakewood, New Jersey. Over the years several major expansions have taken place; the latest just over a year ago. Manley also operates a West Coast distribution facility in Orange, California. While Hank still plays an overall role in the firm, day-to-day management operations are in the hands of his son, vice president Trip Manley (who literally grew up in the company). General Manager Michael Tokarchik, and Manufacturing Manager Pete Coleman also oversee the day-to-day responsibilities with Trip. A copy of the company’s 194-page 50th anniversary catalog is available online at www.manleyperformance.com. A printed hard copy of the catalog, along with a Manley T-shirt, is just $10.
