There have been a lot of Mustang watches available over the years, and Lord knows we’ve owned several of them. Most were basic stainless bodies with nothing more than a Mustang logo of some sort on the face (running horse, 5.0 emblem, Boss 302 logo, etc.). I’d call these “basic enthusiast watches,” mainly because they’re often purchased at a big Mustang show and they’re usually an impulse buy. “Oh look, this watch has a ‘5.0’ on it and it’s only thirty bucks” kind of impulse. Yes, I’ve succumbed to that impulse myself several times and is why I have a Mustang Boss 302 valet box with a couple of well-used Mustang watches in it. Chances are, you probably have a nice timepiece for special events. Wouldn’t it be great to have a Mustang-themed watch that could easily do double duty as daily wear and fit right in for those special occasions; easily looking the part? The creators of REC Watches, Christian Mygh and Jonathan Kamstrup, believe so.

The P-51 Mustang collection is currently slated for three different color combinations. Shown here is the P-51-01 model, which features a black stainless case, black dial, orange hands and black leather strap. The P-51-02 will feature a stainless case with black bezel, cream face with blue hands, and brown leather strap. Finally, the P-51-03 will feature a black case with gold bezel, anthracite face with white and gold hands, and a black leather strap.

REC Watches is the brainstorm of Christian and Jonathan, two enthusiasts that love cars and watches and wanted to meld these two passions into a business venture. Their first line of watches, based off of the famous Mini, has done well and the vintage Mustang has won their fan poll as their next watch creation—The P-51. What’s so special about REC watches you ask? That’s a fair question, and one I asked as well when first conversing with Christian. REC stands for recover, recycle, reclaim. Each REC timepiece uses recycled automobile parts. These parts are recovered, either by REC directly or through vehicle owners themselves, and the parts are reclaimed and used in the production and assembly of the watches. Doing so means no two watches are identical. Each watch is unique in its coloration and finish.

The crown side of the P-51 Mustang collection features a “taillight panel” motif, including the Mustang’s famous tribar taillight design with the crown simulating the Mustang’s rear fuel cap.
On the opposite side of the crown you’ll find REC created a vintage Mustang grille theme here, including Mustang’s corral and grille bars. The stainless lower body is designed to look like the Mustang’s front and rear bumper assemblies as well.

The P-51 Mustang watch collection is the first in the REC Watches line that will feature a story card, which can be scanned via a smart phone or tablet that will take you to a short documentary video on the actual car your watch was created from. Furthermore, each watch will include the actual Mustang’s VIN on the face and on the back of the case. The Mustang touches abound and while some are easily identifiable, others are more subtle. The P-51 is the first watch from REC with a mechanical “engine,” and truly a work of art with an accurate Miyota automatic movement with three hands and date function, 48 hour power reserve, all stainless steel case and top, sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating, water resistant to 30 meters, and a high-quality leather strap.

On the rear of the case is this trick viewing window to the internal movements. Yes, that shield is designed to look like a 1966 Mustang hub cap! A bit hard to see here, but the back of the watch is engraved with the Mustang’s VIN and the total number of watches produced from that particular Mustang!

REC Watches is located in Copenhagen, Denmark, which made the search and recycling of Mini parts easy for its first line of watches. Now, with the P-51 Mustang collection, Mustangs that are suitable for recycling are rare in Europe. As such, REC Watches is looking to Mustang owners worldwide to help secure metal to create the P-51 Mustang collection. If you have a vintage Mustang that is beyond repair sitting in your shop or out back behind the barn and you feel it has an interesting story or history, you can help REC Watches and get yourself a free watch in the process! If you’re interested, simply reach out to REC Watches at cm@recwatches.com and they’ll go over the process in detail.

REC Watches is currently in the middle of a Kickstarter campaign to fund the new P-51 Mustang collection, so you can help REC Watches launch the P-51 Mustang watch by becoming a backer on Kickstarter. If you’re not familiar with how Kickstarter works, small businesses and individual entrepreneurs provide details on their new product launches and you can back the product launch with a specific dollar amount, which will usually net you the finished product or a significant discount on the finished product. In the case of REC Watches they are offering your choice of watch for your backing dollars. There is also an option to receive one of the first ten P-51 watches made per style if you like owning low production numbers. You can read all of the details of REC Watches Kickstarter campaign HERE.
