Hard To Watch: Clean Supercharged S550 Mustang Kisses the Wall at Outlaw Armageddon
When Coyote Power and a Non-prepped Race Surface Go Bad
No-Prep racing is really popular right now; these events makes for some serious head to head action by pitting racers against each other on a surface that is no more prepped than your average road. Big horsepower can be an advantage, but too much and you might be spinning your tires trying to catch traction as you power down the quarter-mile. Since no traction compound is sprayed or heated and dragged on the surface, launches can become unpredictable and therefore exciting to watch for the fans.
It really is a race that boils down to power, how lucky you are at choosing a lane and of course, driver’s skill. Wood the skinny too long initially and you might be sliding as you hunt for traction while gaining speed down the track. Being too conservative could lead to watching taillights disappear off into the distance, so it really does take a level of finesse and patience while dropping the hammer.
Of course, you never really want to see a race go horribly wrong and lead to metal carnage but that’s just what happened at the Outlaw Armageddon No-Prep race recently at Thunder Valley Raceway Park as this brand new Race Red 2015 S550 Mustang GT equipped with a supercharger fought for traction and finally found it before hitting the wall. Look closely and you can see that the Mustang spins through first and second gear before finally grabbing traction and makes a violent left turn across the track into the retaining wall. It really is hard to watch this crash especially when you consider how new this Mustang is, but luckily the driver was not seriously injured and was able to walk away from the accident.
