Mustang guru Brenspeed and Gas Monkey Garage have teamed up to race a 2015 Mustang GT in the grueling One Lap of America event, which pits teams in a 8-day race that combines 19 different individual events at 9 different tracks, and spanning across 11 states. By week’s end, drivers will have covered 3,245 miles with very little sleep! Brent White of Brenspeed and Chris Smith of the United Kingdom will split driving duties.

“The team at Brenspeed has worked hard over the last two weeks getting the 2015 Mustang ready for the One Lap Of America,” said Brent White. “We teamed up with Gas Monkey Garage to build the wicked 2015 Mustang. We have many supporters building this car so thanks to our friends at Afco, Ford Performance, Lucas Oil, Continental Tires, Gas Monkey, 360 Wraps, Kedan Logistics, Razor Scooters, and American Car Magazine.” Also search #teamGMGBrenspeed #oloa2015.

The Mustang will run in the SSGT2 Big Bore class, where it will compete with Corvettes, Camaros, Challengers and other American iron. OLOA rules require that each team run the entire event on one set of tires, and no support vehicles are allowed. Transits between events can be as long as 650 miles, which takes its toll on drivers. You can see all the rules at onelapofamerica.com.

So what are they stuffing into the 2015 Ford Mustang? Since you race what you drive and when you break you need to have it with you, packing as much gear and spares is important. “Here is a short list of our supplies that we packed into our 2015 Team Brenspeed Gas Monkey Garage Mustang,” explained White. “Clothes for two drivers for 8 days of racing, race suites including helmets, spare brake pads, rotors, clutch, half shafts, sway bar end links, and spare tire (one spare is allowed). Remember this race is has to be run on the same set of tires the entire week, on track and off, so our spare is for a disaster situation on the side of the road in the middle of the night. We also packed duct tape, electrical tape, connections, wire, tools, JB weld, silicone, Loctite, and clamps—we have to be ready for anything!” White added. “We also packed Razor scooters to check the tracks, plus fuel can, tarp, chairs, more tools, computers, and several classified go fast items.

The team also has fluids, for maintaining hydration, and some for the car, too. “We have lots of Lucas Oil fluids for oil changes, trans changes, rear changes, and everything we need to keep the drivetrain in perfect working order,” White added.

Maintenance is key, but you also need radar detector(s), inverters, power supplies—it never ends on the electrical side of things. “Our 2015 Mustang is slammed full and ready to go,” said White.

“We wrapped up at the Raceway Park of Midlands in Iowa. Big Chris from the UK had his hands full today on our Team Brenspeed Gas Monkey Garage 2015 Mustang. He did very well. This is only day 2 so as we get more wheel time we will likely get a bit more control of it. The One Lap Of America race is intense between racing, driving, and little sleep so food can be a good thing.” White and Smith are currently running 4th in class.

Having run the One Lap of America in 2012, I can tell you spare parts are important. Jeff Lacnia and I were fortunate enough to have won our class in a 2012 Roush RS3 and we wish the Brenspeed/Gas Monkey Team the best of luck. Stay tuned for more updates.
