The announcement of some really good news serves as my inspiration for this month’s column. Now, that doesn’t mean I can’t think of things to talk about—I actually get inspiration from all sorts of things, each and every day. However, when thinking of a topic for this particular column each month, choosing one from that multitude usually is the most difficult part of the process.

That’s not the case this time, as I’m inspired by and happy to report the the fact that our friend and former editor Steve Turner has landed a new job! While Steve’s good fortune unfortunately brings his time as a 5.0&SF contributor to a quick end, knowing that he’s now in a good spot makes me happy, and I’m sure you’ll all join me in wishing Big Steve all the best in his new post as editor-in-chief of the SVT Performance website (www.svtperformance.com).

In Steve’s announcement—which came by way of a short, corny-but-cool online video (and I told him so)—he answers the one question that it seems most members of the Mustang Nation are always asked: “So...What’s your story? How how did you get into Mustangs (the Mustang lifestyle)? What was your first 'Stang? And so on.” I recommend you watch the video for Steve’s answer.

I know I’ve been asked that question and/or its derivitives countless times in the many years that I’ve been involved with late-model ’Stangs. Like Steve’s story, the tale of my journey into this madness has been called everything from cool, to interesting, to pretty crazy. However, despite the various adjectives, the one constant in my getting into this scene—and staying in it so long, for that matter—has been the way I acquire Mustangs.

Each and every one of the many Ponies I’ve owned has come by way of the proverbial killer deal, the kind of sale or opportunity that you just can’t pass up. I’ve had Mustangs given to me—yes, completely for free. Believe it or not, Project T-top coupe, in its originally rough condition, is one such Pony. I’ve paid as little as $500 for a clean, running Fox, and even scored my wife’s New Edge GT for well below invoice in 2002, thanks to shopping late in the model year and working every Ford, auto club, dealership, and other discounts or incentives that were available at the time.

If I can get a 'Stang for my price or less, that ’Stang usually ends up in my driveway. It’s been that way since I bought my first Pony in 1990, a grey ’84 GT with T-tops that I negotiated down to $1,500, from an asking price of $2,500. Yep, I’m Killer-Deal Kaje alright.

The stories are likely similar for all of us one way or another. I’m sure everyone who reads 5.0 also has an interesting story on how he or she became enamored with Mustang—the car and the culture. You see, while Mustangs are the the highlight of this magazine’s content, the stories told by and about the people who own, drive, and love them are just as fascinating.

This became very clear to me on April 17, 2014, the Mustang’s 50th birthday, when I and several thousand other Mustang fans attended the Mustang Club of America’s huge party in Las Vegas. The rest of the team at www.mustang-360.com did likewise at MCA’s similar shindig in Charlotte, North Carolina. Not only did we see rows and rows of awesome Ponies, we also had opportunities to meet and speak with people from all points of the globe, who love ’Stangs. Each and every one has an interesting story about the road to being so enamored with the cars.

For example, there are the the three brothers from Sandy, Utah, (Jordan, Jaden and Josh Breiner) that I met while cruising the car gathering at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Each Breiner brother drives a modified ’03-’04 Cobra, and they told me they come from a true-Ford-blue, Cobra-loving family. (There are actually seven Terminators among all the Breiners!) That’s a pretty cool story if you ask me. To top it off, Jared told me their dad and sister were also celebrating the 50th—at the MCA event in Charlotte, with their Cobras, of course.

Yes, for each and every one of us, there’s a story or stories that help explain and maybe clarify why we’re involved with late-model ’Stangs. I’d like to hear yours.
