To celebrate the Mustang’s 50th Anniversary, Automodello created this hand-built 1962 Mustang I Concept, which accurately replicates the original Mustang design concept built by Ford and shown to the world. Three officially licensed 1962 Mustang 1 Concept cars are available for purchase – a 1:43- and 1:24-scale Standard Editions and 1:24-scale Tribute Editions.

This concept car dubbed the Mustang I made its debut at Watkins Glen on October 7, 1962. With American F1 driver Dan Gurney, the Mustang I Concept made a shocking recorded lap time just shy of the pace set prior to the Formula 1 race in that year’s Grand Prix. This very car spiked renewed interest in Ford creating performance cars and earned the cover of Car & Driver in 1962.

“For the Mustang, the original concept had only been modeled in 1/64th by Mattel as a Hot Wheels, never in 1/43 or 1/24,” says James Cowen, CEO of Diecasm, LLC and Automodello. “Since the Concept was at The Henry Ford, we got them involved with the project,” Cowen tells us. “Then research shows that Dan Gurney debuted the Concept in 1962, so we added Dan to the project with an exclusive All-American Racers license and had Dan sign 200 cars, 50 in 1/43 and 150 in 1/24.” (The 1:43 scale Tribute Editions are now retired and are no longer available for purchase.)

Orders are now being taken through the Henry Ford Museum or through Diecasm, Automodello’s corporate parent. Packaging for both Standard and Tribute Editions feature the 50th-Anniverary logo. You can see Automodello’s 1962 Mustang I Concept at the Mustang 50 Years Party in Charlotte this April. The Standard 1:43 edition is priced at $119.95 limited to 999 available and 1/24 cars are limited to 499 units priced at $299.95 each. The Tribute Editions are extremely limited with 150 cars (1:24) available for $350.00 each and come with certificates hand-signed by Dan Gurney.

“We’ve been the official model for Amelia Island Concours and Concours d’Elegance of America twice, and for many national club events. Throughout our short history we actively try to support and respect history.”

Thanks to Automodello, we got our hands on one of the 500, and we think it’s awesome! The replica is carefully placed in a decorative display box which helps present the Mustang in amazing fashion. The mini-stage, which the car rests on, can easily be taken in and out of the box. Not only does the box come sporting the all-new 50th Anniversary logo, but it also protects the Mustang. We really love the attention to detail, from the colors and gauge package, to the 3-spoke steering wheel to the tread on the Firestone tires. As diecast enthusiasts, we're proud to add this to our collection.
