George Follmer Edition Saleen Hits the Streets
Saleen Automotive has unveiled yet another specialty model, the George Follmer-Edition Mustang.
"As a specialty manufacturer and [racecar] driver myself, it's the perfect alignment of passions that allowed us to complete an entire collection of vehicles," said Steve Saleen, president and CEO of Saleen.
The Follmer Mustang continues the tradition that Saleen began in the late '00s. Models include the Saleen/Parnelli Jones Edition and Dan Gurney Edition Mustangs, and according to Saleen, each vehicle is representative of the drivers in the Mission Bell race that took place at Riverside International Raceway on October 4, 1970. This particular race was the final of an extremely competitive season for the SCCA Trans-American Championship. The Saleen/Follmer Edition is styled from the #16 '69 Boss 302 Mustang that he campaigned the same year.
Saleen technology can be found throughout the '14 Saleen/Follmer Edition, including a naturally aspirated 470-plus-horsepower (estimated) 302 high-revving engine, track-tuned suspension, and a six-speed manual transmission.
Shelby GT500 Super Snake Appearing in Action Movie
Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez will be staring alongside the popular Shelby GT500 Super Snake, a high-horsepower Mustang, in the new action movie Getaway.
"When After Dark Films needed to cast a high- performance car for its action thriller, Getaway (www.getawaymovie.com), it tapped the iconic Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake built by Shelby American," said Austin Knott of Shelby. According to Knott, a pair of Shelby GT500 Super Snakes were used to make the film, one driven in scenes filmed on location in Bulgaria, while another was tapped for audio recording in Los Angeles.
The plot centers around racecar driver Brent Magna (Hawke), who is pitted against the clock, while desperately trying to save the life of his kidnapped wife. "Brent commandeers a Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake, taking it and its unwitting owner (Gomez) on a high-speed race against time at the command of the mysterious villain holding his wife hostage," he added.
The film is rated PG-13 for intense action, violence, and mayhem throughout, some rude gestures and language. It opens August 30, 2013.
Jovanis Takes Fifth True Street Title
New Jersy racer Mike Jovanis scored his fifth True Street title running in the 7th Annual JE Pistons NMCA Muscle Car Nationals at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. Jovanis, who recently won True Street at the NMRA at SRP, averaged 8.92 with his ultra-clean '89 LX.
"This race was all about survival," stated Jovanis. "There was a lot of breakage—even my own car was breaking up at the top-end. I made three passes in 38 minutes, which is hard on the converter, especially in a turbo car," he added.
Jovanis had run as quick as 8.30s recently, and 8.40s in testing at the Ohio track. His LX utilizes a DiSomma Racing Engines 347 with TFS heads, and a Garrett T-4/88 turbo with 25 psi of boost. It's backed with a 'glide and is tuned by Frank Soldridge PSI Speed Solutions.
Mike Harris Scores Big At 3rd Annual Cobra Jet Showdown
The 3rd Annual Cobra Jet Showdown, held in conjunction with the 7th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Nationals at Summit Raceway Park, was a huge success with over 40 CJs in attendance.
Mike Harris, who wrecked his CJ last year after a monster wheelie at Cecil County Dragway, came back with a vengeance to win the Top Stock class. Harris took the win with an impressive 8.75 to edge out number-one-qualifier and CJ-standout Chris Holbrook, who ran a quicker 8.74 pass.
"The Cobra Jet Showdown, presented by Diversified Products Marketing, continues to be a great race for all our Cobra Jet owners, with cars competing as-delivered, to wildly modified within NHRA rules," said Jesse Kershaw of Ford Racing. "It's a rare chance for owners to talk about performance in a competitive and friendly environment. Ford Racing is proud to bring this class to NMCA, and thankful for our loyal teams and event sponsors."
PB Candies scored in the Super Stock/CJ class with a blistering 8.00 in the final, topping Ray Skillman, who ran numerous 7-second runs but slowed slightly in the final. Ron Matcham won the Index race in his SS/DA 2010 CJ. He ran an 8.78 on a 9.85 index. In total, there were 40 CJs and 29 competitors in three classes, including Super Stock CJ, CJ Top Stock, and Competition Index.
