Shelby GT Reintroduced to Lineup For 2014
Unveiled By Shelby American at L.A. Auto Show
Shelby American, a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc., just reintroduced one of its popular cars back into the lineup for 2014 – the Shelby GT. Unveiled at the LA Auto Show, this Mustang is based off of the 2014 Mustang GT, capable of 430hp, and we got a good look at it before its big debut. Again, the optional GT/CS (California Special) supercharged Mustang model returns and can be ordered with a 525hp or 624hp version, making it the most powerful Shelby GT/CS to date.
“The Shelby GT was one of the most important vehicles in modern day Shelby history,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American. “It kicked off Shelby’s rebirth in Las Vegas by putting a Mustang-based small-block car into Ford dealerships. Ever since the Shelby GT went out of the production, people have clamored for its return.”
Back in 2007, Carroll Shelby and Ford Racing created the Shelby GT, which was assembled at Ford’s Flat Rock Plant in Michigan. This Shelby GT came equipped with the 4.6L V-8 powerplant and was available in either Performance White or Black with silver Le Mans stripes. In 2008, the color Vista Blue was added to the lineup as well as the choice between coupe and convertible. Approximately 8,000 Shelby GT’s were built.
The Shelby GT Mustang became an increasingly popular car, belonging to passionate groups dedicated to the car. The cars were customized to the owner’s wants and needs, and then driven out on the track and street.
This new Shelby GT is a post-title program, meaning that Ford dealers will send the customers’ GT coupe or convertible to the Shelby headquarters to be outfitted to the customer’s personality. Customization begins with every material performance aspect of the car being enhanced or replaced with parts sporting that Shelby name. The entry-level package comes with a Ford Racing suspension, Shelby exhaust, intake and engine tune good for 430hp. It also includes wheels and tires, short shifter, hood, and those Shelby Le Mans stripes.
Customers’ can choose from many appealing options for the Shelby GT Mustang such as better braking, suspension components, and of course, a supercharger upgrade. On top of that, an array of performance and styling parts are available straight from Shelby Performance Parts.
“While the Shelby GT is very affordable for such an exclusive vehicle, a post title program allows us to take performance to new levels,” said Shelby American VP of Production, Gary Davis. “Working with partners like Ford Racing, it is docile enough to be a daily driver and still dominate the track on the weekends.” The top-of-the-line Shelby GT/CS version is capable of 624hp and can shoot from 0-60 in 3.7 seconds, and is said to dominate the quarter-mile with in the 11-second range.
“No other carmaker offers this level of performance, heritage, and iconic styling at this price, making the Shelby GT the best all-around American car in its class,” said Luft. “Each car will be issued a Shelby American CSM number for documentation in our Shelby American Worldwide Registry to help maximize potential future value.”
Let’s talk prices. The base Shelby GT package, which doesn’t include the car, is $14,995 making the overall total $45,000 including the base GT. The Shelby GT/CS package starts at $27,995.
