Replacing Your Classic Ford's Fuel Tank - Bird Feeder

Sound-deadening softens the sound of fuel sloshing inside the tank. We're going to replace it now for the new tank.

The fuel sending unit is just like those we see on Ford compacts and intermediates...

...Lubricate the O-ring with white lithium grease and install the sending unit as shown.

Securing the fuel sending unit is easy. Seat the sending unit and make sure the O-ring is firmly seated. The lock ring tightens clockwise. Turn the lock ring until it will go no further...

...A brass or nylon drift and a hammer-not steel on steel-should be employed to seat the ring, even though many seasoned mechanics still use a simple screwdriver (sparks are bad here).

New high-pressure fuel hose is installed before the tank goes in. We stress high-pressure hose for its fuel resistance to today's harsh fuel additives. It's the same size as low-pressure hose, but much stronger. Call it life insurance for old Fords. Most big-block Ford applications have a 31/48-inch fuel line. Small-blocks have a 51/416-inch line, though we recommend a 31/48-inch line for high-horsepower small-blocks as well.
