The expansion valve (A) controls refrigerant flow by sensing the temperature of the low-pressure gas exiting the evaporator (B). When the temperature rises, the valve opens more, allowing more abundant refrigerant flow into the evaporator. When temperature drops, the valve closes, slowing the flow of refrigerant. When this valve is faulty, things can get either too warm or too cold. A frozen evaporator is typically the first clue of a faulty expansion valve.
