Weatherstrip AdhesiveI'm having a disagreement with my restoration shop about the correct color of weatherstrip adhesive for the door and trunk lid. I'm quite sure you have stated previously that yellow rather than black adhesive was factory correct. Please confirm my opinion.Sam McCainChicago, IL

You are correct. Yellow weatherstrip adhesive was used on '65-'73 Mustangs at all three assembly plants.

Backup Lamp GasketsI was at Carlisle All-Ford Nationals recently and found a pair of N.O.S. '67 Mustang backup-lamp gaskets, still in the Ford package. Both gaskets have the Ford part number on the back side. The only problem is, the gaskets are black, not gray. I always see gray gaskets on '67-'68 Mustangs. I believe the '65-'66 Mustangs have black gaskets. Do I have an early set of '67-'68 black backup gaskets? Do you have any suggestions as to what I have, and what is concours correct? The correct backup-lamp gasket for all '67-'70 Mustangs is Ford PN C7ZZ-15533-A. The correct color is gray. For some reason, possibly a supplier change, Ford Parts and Service Division sold only black C7ZZ-15533-A gaskets from about 1979 until they were no longer available, sometime around 1999-2000. It's also possible the same supplier made the '65-'66 gaskets and decided to make all '65-'70 gaskets in black rather than two colors. The black C7ZZ-15533-A gaskets are excellent quality, just not concours correct.

Black Hooded GTDo you know if the '69 Mustang GT was available with the black hood option? I know you could get the 428 Cobra Jet with Shaker hoodscoop on any '69 Mustang, but I thought the black hood was available on the Mach 1 only.Bob StevensVia the Internet

The "two-tone," low-gloss-black top-of-hood and cowl-paint treatment was a factory option for the '69 GT Mustang. If your car was equipped with the black hood from the factory, the door tag will have the numeral 5 next to the paint code. For example, Candyapple Red's code T would become T5 with the black-out option. According to the '69 Ford Motor Company price list, dated September 27, 1968, the two-tone, low-gloss black (top of hood and cowl) had a retail price of $18.50 and a dealer cost of $14.39.

Decal PlacementAre there any sources that indicate the correct decals and their placement for Mustangs? I'm close to finishing the restoration of my '67 convertible, and the decals will be the final touch.Mike SeymourVia the Internet

There are two excellent sources for '67 Mustang decals: Jim Osborn Reproductions (101 Ridgecrest Dr., Lawrenceville, GA 30245; 770/962-7556) and ECS Automotive (580 Autumn Bluff Dr., Ellisville, MO 63021; 636/207-7767). Osborn's also has reprints of the '67 factory assembly manual that can be helpful with some of the decal locations. ECS carries a full line of the body stickers and even has engineering tags and such for wiring harnesses. Both are excellent resources.

Tips or No TipsI recently acquired a '70 Mustang convertible with the 351 Cleveland four-barrel, Shaker hoodscoop, C6 automatic, and air-conditioning that, according to the Marti report, is one of three built with its options and colors. Upon visual inspection, it has the incorrect exhaust system and obviously the wrong exhaust tips. I have looked in many Mustang books and searched the Internet for a picture and some explanation as to what should be the correct dual-exhaust/tips setup for a '70 convertible and have found nothing. I've seen other '70 convertibles with turn-down exhaust tips and others with straight tips. I have also seen some with the rectangular chrome tips and cutout rear valance panel as used on '70 Mach 1s. I am aware of my car's rarity, but I'm not too keen on concours cars, as I prefer to drive my Mustangs. I realize I can do just about anything with the exhaust system, and especially the exhaust tips, but what is the correct setup?Carl PatonVia the Internet

The correct Ford muffler assemblies for your '70 convertible are Ford part numbers D0ZZ-5230-B and D0ZZ-5230-D. Both left and right muffler assemblies come with the inlet pipes and tailpipes welded to the muffler as an assembly. The tailpipes turned down and did not have the chrome tips. The mufflers and tailpipes were aluminized steel, while the inlet pipe was regular exhaust pipe and not aluminized.

The '70 Mach 1 with the 351C engine used muffler assemblies D0ZZ-5230-C and D0ZZ-5230-J, which were the same as the D0ZZ-5230-B and D assemblies with the exception of the tailpipes and engineering numbers on the mufflers that identified the two systems. The Mach 1 tailpipes were cut short with locating tabs for the chrome exhaust tips. According to the 1970 Ford Facts Book and the 1970 edition of the Ford Parts and Accessories Manual, the chrome tips were factory installed only on the Mach 1s.
