Hood Blackout, Snap-on Mustang Toolbox, and more Vintage Mustang Questions Answered
Resto Roundup: Vintage Mustang Concours Technical Questions Answered
I am in the process of repainting the hood on my 1970 Mach 1 Dearborn-built car. Is the black hood stripe a matte or flat black? What brand of paint would you suggest using? Thank you for your help.
Via the Internet
The correct paint for the hood blackout on your 1970 Mach 1 is Textured Low Gloss Black. You can purchase from TCP Global under part number DDL 9381. You can reach TCP Global at (858) 909-2110 or online at www.tcpglobal.com.
Snap-On Mustang Toolbox
I heard that Snap-On made a 50th Anniversary Toolbox? My Snap-On dealer knows nothing about it. Did they make one? I know they made a 35th, but did they indeed make a 50th?
Nags Head, North Carolina
Snap-On did make a 50th anniversary Mustang toolbox, but they did not do the best job promoting it. The box was available after the 50th. They made them in white only. Here’s a picture of one.
Styled Steel Centers
I was at a local swap meet and I found this 1965 styled steel wheel center cap new in the FoMoCo box. When I got home, I took the cap out of the box and noticed that the back was different than your typical center cap. Instead of the normal two screws to retain it to the wheel, it snaps in with a ring of spring tabs. Did I get a reproduction in a Ford box?
The C5ZZ-1130-G that you found is a rare find. Your center cap is the early 1965 version that was replaced by the C5ZZ-1130-W.
Radio Block Off
I have a 1965 Mustang that my grandfather bought new. My grandmother recently found the original sales invoice, and I discovered the car came with no radio from Ford. The car now has an AM radio that I assume was installed in the dealer. I would like to find an original radio block-off plate to display with the car. I understand there is a difference between 1965 and 1966 radio block-off plates. Would you happen to have a photo for identification purposes?
That’s really neat that your grandmother found the original invoice to your grandfather’s Mustang. I have included pictures of each year’s block-off plate. The top plate is the 1966 version and the bottom one is for 1965. On the backside of the plate, it will have the engineering number, which is C4ZB for the 1965, while the 1966 will have a C6ZB prefix.
