If you own a 4.6-powered Mustang, you might feel a little left out, compared to the 5.0 guys, when it comes to affordable aftermarket parts. The truth is, since the 4.6 cars are still relatively new, the aftermarket just needs to catch up. One example of this is the new Cold Air and Ram Air Intakes from JLT. These intakes are available for all 4.6-powered Mustang GTs, Mach 1s, Cobras, and even 5.4-powered Lightning trucks. We got ahold of Jay Tucker of JLT, and he recommended we try one of the Combo Kits ($225 black, $250 color), which include all the parts to make both an RAI and a CAI.
Free-flowing intakes can make some ridiculous power increases on supercharged cars, so we were curious to see what one could do for our near-stock '96 Cobra, equipped only with long-tube headers, a 2 1/2-inch off-road exhaust, and a custom tune. Though the Cobra already had a K&N drop-in filter and the silencer removed, there was still a definite seat-of-the-pants improvement with each of the intakes, especially the CAI. What was really impressive was the increased throttle response and aggressive sound under the hood. This isn't surprising, considering the 4-inch diameter of the JLT tubes and the larger filter.
With the car on the chassis dyno, we installed the RAI, and the extra airflow paid off-to the tune of 6 hp and 5 lb-ft of torque at the peaks, with even greater gains (up to 10 hp and 7 lb-ft) up higher. This shows that the stock air box just can't keep up, even with the stock mass air and throttle body in place.
