Horse Sense:
Paul Svinicki has tried Bassani's Mid-Length headers on this GT, his '03 Cobra race car, and the Mach 1 used for our drag and dyno thrash ("Mach Speed," Apr. '03, p. 44). He hasn't been disappointed yet with either the power or the sound the headers produce.

Not too long, not too short-Bassani's new Mid-Length headers may be just right for SOHC and DOHC modular owners looking to lose some unneeded backpressure. Posing for our lead photo is a prototype pair for Four-Valve applications that is close, but not identical, to production form. For this test, however, we installed and dyno'd the SOHC version (the pictured DOHC set went on the Mach 1 used in our April drag test). In the Bassani tradition, the material of choice is stainless steel with a high-temp coating, so you'll probably wear out your short-block before you wear out the headers.

Not only are these scavengers effective (as our dyno sidebar will detail), but they're also-at least as modular headers go-relatively straightforward to install. Paul Svinicki, who's had plenty of experience bolting headers onto cammers and whose yellow "Ignitor" GT we used for our testing, simply states, "These are the easiest modular headers we've ever installed.

"With that said, here's a quick look at how they go on and how they perform.

Some Exhaustive Dyno Results
Before you skip ahead to the dyno chart, it's important to realize that, during our "before" testing, the PHP Ignitor GT was already equipped with short-tube headers, making the improvements posted by the Mid-Lengths particularly impressive. Had we been swapping from factory manifolds, the gains would have been even more dramatic.

Also, from the rear-wheel numbers, you'll quickly deduce that our tester wasn't stock. Its short-block is a 5.0 stroker from ModMax, which also supplied the cams. The heads are ported by Fox Lake and have a Bullitt intake nestled in between. The mass air is stock, but PHP bolted on its single-blade throttle body, fuel rails, and underdrive pulleys. And, as previously noted, Bassani's cat-equipped X-pipe and '03 Cobra after-cat system were used downstream of both sets of headers in our test.
