We’ve all seen exhaust cutouts that open up the exhaust system by essentially bypassing the mufflers, creating an open-header-like exhaust note that scares old women and makes children cry (and we mean that in a good way!). There are several cutouts on the market but they all require custom installation, preferably by a muffler shop. Roush has a fix for the late-model Mustang market with a bolt-on cat-back active exhaust that is even programmable.

The kit (PN 422100) comes with everything you need after the catalytic converters, including new mandrel-bent 304 stainless tubing, new Roush performance mufflers, electronic valves, mounting brackets, wiring, 4-inch polished tips, Active Exhaust Control Module, and 4-mode mode selector switch that is installed in the center console. Once installed, the system has three main modes: Touring for a quiet daily driver mode; Sport that is louder but still street legal; and Track, which barks like a rabid junkyard dog and will make all heads turn your way. There is also a Roush app you can download to a smartphone that allows custom calibration of the sound.

It’s not cheap but is a trick system that you can buy straight from Roush or through several Mustang parts suppliers. Check out this video on the system and installation details. Galpin Auto Sports (GAS) in Reseda, California did the install while the cameras rolled, and tested it out for sound. All we ask is you don’t drive by our house at 2:00 AM in Track mode, please!
