In the high-performance-Mustang game, getting a competitive edge is often accomplished by keeping competitors in the dark about your ride's state of modification. There's nothing like seeing the dejected face of a driver who has just been served a long look at your Pony's taillights after a car-on-car confrontation (at the track, we hope).

Such triumph is even more satisfying when you hear the question, "What the hell is in that thing?" It's fun to answer bone-stock. Well, as hard-core supporters of Mustangs being stealth whenever possible, we'll accept this occasional fib. However, while we all know that convincingly telling the tale isn't easy, passing a modified Mustang off as stock is possible.

Thanks to stock-look aftermarket components (ask Big Steve about the pulley on Project Vapor Trail's blower), as well as cool hidden engine mods—like porting, stroker kits, torque converters—making secretive steam is a trick of the trade. One of our hottest topics lately is this covert side of performance upgrading. Of course, Project Cheaper Sleeper epitomizes the idea, with its modified stock components and an out-of-sight nitrous-oxide system. Thus far, Sleeper has stumped dragstrip tech officials and even the sharpest 'Stangbangers when we've challenged them to find it.

The secretive attitude continues on with this tech effort—installing and testing a cool nitrous-oxide concept from JMS Chip & Performance. The company's Stage 1 nitrous system for '11-'14 Mustang GTs (PN NOS-5000; $1,499) is a simple source of additional horsepower and torque on a stock 5.0 and is cleverly disguised as a bag of workout gear for the gym.

Eddie Rios of Addiction Motorsports is the wrench man for this project, which without question is the easiest nitrous install we've ever seen. Follow the photos and captions to learn more about this stealth, new system.

On The Dyno

After making baseline power/torque dyno runs on Addiction Motorsports' '13 Mustang GT, and Eddie Rios' relatively quick installation of JMS Chip & Performance's '11-'14 5.0 Mustang nitrous-oxide system, we returned to the Dynojet chassis dyno to evaluate all four levels of additional horsepower that the system is designed to produce. The results presented in the graph and chart clearly show that JMS is right on the money with its Coyote nitrous system. Overall, the kit provides a huge big bang for the $1,500 that it costs, especially when its installation simplicity is taken into account.

On The Strip

Timing for our nitrous experiment was perfect, as we completed the effort one week before a Hot Rod magazine track rental at Auto Club Dragway in Bakersfield, California. As we anticipated, the big shot of nitrous easily put Addiction Motorsports' '13 Mustang GT in the 11-second zone. However, speed for the run (118.97 mph) indicates the Pony just might gallop closer to the 10s with good traction, atmospheric conditions, and a little less weight. Couple those variables with a few basic bolt-ons (such as CAI and exhaust), and you're honestly sitting on a mid-10-second 'Stang. We really like that idea.

Eddie Rios’ ’13 Mustang GT leaves the line hard thanks to Mickey Thompson’s 19-inch ET Street Radials. With the exception of sticky rubber and the hidden nitrous system we installed, the new 5.0 was bone-stock, fully loaded, and heavy as all get out when we tested the Pony at Auto Club Dragway in Bakersfield, California. Don’t be fooled by the high-11-second e.t. Based on the speed (118.97 mph) and taking into account that with a 123hp nitrous shot, the 5.0 in Eddie’s 4,100-pound (with driver) ’Stang is making approximately 540 hp at the crank, we’re confident our JMS nitrous-shot ’Stang is an 11.40 player on the quarter-mile.

Horse Sense: We're often asked about the difference between medical nitrous and the nitrous oxide commonly used for high-performance automotive upgrades. Contrary to widespread (via the Internet) theories on the subject, there actually is only a slight difference between the juice that's used for making big steam and the nitrous that patients inhale while their molars are being extracted by the dentist. The automotive blend (Nitrous Plus) contains a small amount of sulfur dioxide (SO2), which is added to prevent users from becoming addicted and abusing nitrous by huffing it. Medicinal juice (U.S.P.) is free of such preservatives. However, there is absolutely no performance advantage over the sulfurized nitrous.
