Considering the brands we work for, we are constantly hearing about Mustangs capable of ridiculous amounts of power. This 2008 Ford Mustang GT owned by Marc Sorger, general manager of The Mustang Shop, is no exception, and features a NASCAR-powered heart stuffed inside the S-197 engine bay. Now that’s something you don’t see everyday!
What started as a brand new daily driver in 2008 was quickly built up to dominate the track with 724 horsepower to the rear wheels. But when his built 4.6-liter V8 started experiencing overheating issues, Sorger opted for a whole different breed of power -- a 358ci NASCAR-sourced V8 engine.
This heavy-duty V8 came straight out of Mark Martin’s Pfizer Sprint Cup car is being built up into Sorger’s Mustang to compete in the NASA American Iron Extreme Class. The Mustang Shop bought the engine along with several other components from Roush Yates Engines and got to work. While the stock hood was cut to accommodate the large engine breathing underneath, the whole project is street-legal, licensed, and insured.
The shifter and driveshaft also came out of Martin’s car, but the intake, cam, and carburetor were switched out to make the car more road-course friendly. Shifting power comes from a TEX Racing 4-speed clutchless transmission and the full suspension package was provided by Whiteline Flatout with a watts link and anti-dive kit, while Randy’s Ring & Pinion/Yukon Gears supplied the racing differential, axles and gears.
On its first dyno run here, this naturally aspirated Mustang put down 652 rwhp and 800 hp at the crank! Currently the car is capable of 817 hp at the flywheel with a goal of 850 hp to the crank.
