Spencer Harris, who is sponsored by the Make A Wish Foundation as a Make A Wish child, owns this very special Mustang. Making dreams come true for terminally ill children is what they do, and Spencer's wish was for a super-nice, vintage Mustang hardtop. He wanted a car that would run hard and look great doing it. The Foundation located a '65 Mustang six-cylinder hardtop for Spencer, and work began. Word spread in the Mustang community, and many manufacturers were glad to contribute to Spencer's dream car-making his wish a reality. Let's look at the results of everyone's hard work.
A complete hardware package from AMK Products was used in the assembly of the car. The hot-looking Mustang True Blue paintwork on the car is the product of Barber Automotive, and it shows off the Vintage Wheel Works 16X8 Vintage 40 wheels nicely. Dunlop tires sized 225/50-26 are out front, and are backed up by a set of Nitto Drag Radials sized 245/50-16 for the rear axle.
Underneath, upgrades include a new front suspension from Mustangs Plus. Calvert Racing monoleaf rear springs, along with Cal Track under-rider bars stabilize the rear axle. Up front, a Total Control manual rack-and-pinion steering setup from Mustangs Plus makes vehicle handling a precise matter. Steering input is fed into an Ididit steering column, topped of with a beautiful leather-wrapped, Shelby-style steering wheel from LeCarra. The car is slowed by Stainless Steel Brakes Force 10 front disc brakes, with Ford drums out back. A Bias Bar Master Cylinder kit from John's Mustangs forces the fluid through brand-new brake lines from Classic Tube out to all four corners.
The engine and driveline for Spencer's car are first-rate all the way through. Under the hood lives a Ford Performance Solutions 418ci Windsor engine. The potent engine uses a Scat crank and rods. These are mated with Probe forged pistons yielding 10.5:1 compression when combined with Victor Jr. aluminum heads from Edelbrock. Comp Cams supplied a complete cam and valvetrain. On top of the Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake is a Barry Grant 750-cfm Demon carb, which is fed with a BG fuel pump and pressure regulator. Gasoline is delivered from a Fuel Safe 16-gallon racing fuel cell. The induction end on the engine is further livened up with a Nitrous Works 125/250hp wet nitrous kit. An MSD distributor and 6AL ignition box fires the engine off through a set of Ford Racing Performance Parts plug wires. Exhaust chores are handled by ceramic-coated Hooker Super Competition headers, which empty into a custom 3-inch exhaust system built by Kings Muffler and Brake of Bakersfield, California.
Many thanks go to Tremec Transmissions and Dark Horse Performance for the Tremec TKO five-speed transmission, McLeod clutch, flywheel and scattershield. A hydraulic clutch linkage kit from John's Mustangs activates the clutch. The TKO turns an aluminum driveshaft, which was contributed to Spencer's car by Mustangs Plus. At the rear axle, Strange Engineering supplied the 9-inch case with 3.89:1 gears, 31 spline axles, and Auburn Gear limited slip differential.
The inner world on Spencer's Mustang is a combination of business and pleasure. Wiring is handled with new harnesses from Ron Francis wire works, with the power stored in a trunk-mounted Holley Annihilator battery. Vic's Upholstery and Stitch Craft provided the light-gray vinyl custom interior, which is highlighted with a JME Enterprises gauge pod, fitted with Auto Meter gauges. All in all, it's an inviting place to be.
