Car projects are a dime a dozen, whether it’s being restored to its original condition or going all out with a full restomod on a rotisserie, there’s something out there getting sanded down for paint or getting an engine dropped into a bay as we speak. Here at Modified Mustangs & Fords, we like to see what’s happening out in the restomod world.
Also, for some, it’s that time of year again, meaning that it’s crunch time to get those ongoing projects done in time for the biggest automotive trade show of the year in Las Vegas -- the 2013 SEMA show. Sleepless nights may be on the agenda to get every little detail done before the big debut.
We know that not all builds are specially-built for SEMA, and we like to bring those to the spotlight as well. Here are some of the incredible builds going on out there this very second in no particular order.
Pure Vision 1970 Mustang
The Anvil Mustang
This crazy 1970 Mustang was envisioned and brought to life by Steve Strope and Pure Vision. Stuffed inside the engine bay is a Jon Kaase Racing 520ci all-aluminum Boss Nine with the new eight-stack EFI injection. This setup is meant to significantly reduce weight up on the nose. It will share many of the same carbon fiber body panels as its sister car, the Anvil Mustang.
The new owner – who remains anonymous – is a successful high-level businessman and part-time racer, so beefing up the transmission was a must. To get the job done, Keisler Automotive’s new dog box clutchless six-speed manual was installed. A modified Heidt’s independent rear suspension has also been added to the project.
Going with a vintage race theme, GT40-inspired racing and rocker stripes were added. Since Halibrand wheels are popular among GT40s, Strope decided to work with EVOD Industries to recreate the Gulf Racing GT40 18-inch six-spoke wheels complete with three-blade spinners.

A-Team 1978 Mustang II Mustang Evolution
The Mustang II is often referred to as the redheaded stepchild of Mustangs, but we have one here that might just change your mind.

This 1978 Mustang II dubbed Mustang Evolution will feature one big powerful heart, a Triton V-10 engine. On top of the engine, custom-made Triton V-10 valve covers made by Commercial Powder Coating, Inc., will set off the engine with some retro styling.
Other goodies we’ve mustered up on the build include full Magnaflow exhaust including the headers down to the exhaust tips, all installed by Custom Exhaust Specialties. Race Mesh Grille provided the front grille and Dakota Digital gauges will power the instrument panel. Clayton Machine Works supplied billet window cranks and door handles.
Dual Bosch 044 pumps with Aftermarket Industries parts and a 3L surge tank are also a key to this incredible build. We can’t forget the Be Cool radiator, 10mm wires by Taylor Cables/Vertex with HO coils, and Accufab, Inc. throttle body installed on the intake manifold.
The front sports a prototype bumper and the rear will feature sequential tails. To help that blue paint pop, the wheels are blacked-out Lagunas wrapped with Toyo Tires.
Inside, an Alpine Stereo will be installed featuring GPS, DVD, Navigation, and Bluetooth capabilities. Also, sound equipment credit goes to Arc Audio.
With so many interesting things going into this ride, it has been described as “taking a 12-inch hot dog and stuffing it into a 6-inch bun.”

George Poteet’s 1969 Ford Torino
Rad Rides by Troy
Here sits George Poteet’s Talladega-inspired 1969 Ford Torino in Whiskey Tennessee Gold and Daytona Sand with flat black accents as well as a couple photos without paint sporting a completely sinister appearance. This same exact car was featured in Hot Rod and stole the show before it was even painted. Almost every nook and cranny of this car has been modified to make it one heck of a showstopper.
This insane Torino underwent some intense metalwork with all body panels modified by Rad Rides by Troy. The car was shortened 3-inches, via the front fenders, with the wheelbase 1-inch shorter than stock, and the body was widened a total of 5-inches. Even the aluminum hood was hand-built. Pretty much everything you see besides the roof and doors have been custom-built for this car.
Pop the hood and gaze at the ultra-rare 529 Boss FX V-8 heart with a Ford experimental mechanical fuel-injection intake converted to EFI. The car sports aluminum Jon Kaase Boss 429 cylinder heads with machine work done by FX Engines in Mokena, Illinois. This bad boy generates 780hp and 720 lb-ft of torque! Not only is it pretty to look at, but it has the bite to back up its bark. Exhaust features include Rad Rides custom headers and stainless exhaust connected to Flowmaster Series 40 mufflers.
An Art Morrison chassis is standard with a C5 Corvette front suspension and custom rear suspension by Rad Rides. This bad Torino features front and rear springs by RideTech, and front and rear sway bars by Speedway Engines.
Stopping power is provided by Wilwood brakes (6-piston front, 4-piston rear) hiding behind Custom Billet Specialties wheels wrapped with BFG tires. The driveline consists of a Bowlex 5-speed connected to a Mark Williams driveshaft, axles, and ring and pinion stuffed inside a 9-inch rear end.

Dustin Burr and the folks at Wilwood have been working diligently on one project, a 1966 Mustang with a modern powertrain. Not making its SEMA debut until 2014, this classic is receiving the royal restomod treatment with a brand-new Coyote 5.0 V-8 engine and transmission out of a 2011 Mustang GT. You can bet that this Mustang will feature Wilwood’s latest and greatest brake performance parts.
This project started back in June of 2012 and is currently ongoing. The car was stripped naked of anything and everything that could be unbolted, cut, torched, or knocked off. The body of the car is the only original part of the old classic Mustang.
The body of the ’66 was blasted and etch-primed by Pacific Coast Power Coating. Front and rear suspension components are from TCI.
Peek inside and you’ll see a Chris Alston roll cage with inner fender tubs, Vintage Air a/c and front runner system. Boze Forged wheels (19 x 11) wrapped with Falken Azenis 615-RT tires help tie the exterior together.
The goal weight for the project is 2,600lbs. and it will be track ready, Power Tour capable, and easy to drive!
1967 Gulf Racing Fairlane

One bold mamma jamma will likely be stealing the spotlight under the bright lights of SEMA, a 1967 Ford Fairlane Gulf Racing Rally Car.
The exterior features Gulf Racing colors sprayed on by Bare Bones Custom Paint & Speed Shop out of Houston, Texas. It includes a 427 Ram Air fiberglass hood to really add some muscle, and bumpers from Crites Restoration Parts in Ashville, Ohio with Bullet Racing mirrors from Drake Automotive (Henderson, Nevada).
Pop the hood and gaze over the Ford FE Big Block 390ci built to nearly 427 specs. The build includes Performer RPM aluminum heads, manifold, Pro-Flo EFI electronic fuel injection, high-flow water pump and harmonic balancer. Ceramic-coated headers by Doug’s Headers connect to a Flowmaster 2.5-inch stainless steel exhaust system for a rumble to accompany that big V-8 engine.
To provide stopping power to the beast, SSBC Stainless Steel Brake Corp. from Clarence, New York provided four-wheel discs including Big Bite 13-inch front rotors, 12-inch rear rotors and 4-piston calipers.
Other goodies noted on this build include Scott Drake Cobra Air Cleaner with a K&N filter, engine hardware and under hood detailing kit, March Performance serpentine belt drive conversion, Ford Racing 427 valve covers, timing chain and sprocket. All of the fuel lines are stainless steel. It features an oil cooler, filter relocation and electric fans, perma-cool all from Ontario, California.
Shifting power is provided by a Tremec TKO 5-speed transmission with a Hurst shifter from
Hurst Driveline Conversions. For handling, the suspension and steering have been modified with Performance 1-inch drop coil and leaf springs, Eaton Detroit springs, and a Shelby Upper Control Arm lowering conversion. Hellwig sway bars were thrown in for good measure.
If that wasn’t enough, check out the interior. The Fairlane’s interior features TSXR Sport Seats from TMI, Dakota Digital VHX Gauges (Sioux Falls, South Dakota), Corso Feroce steering wheel (Scott Drake from Henderson, NV) Acoustic sound deadener and insulation (QuietRide Solutions from Stockton, CA) as well as carpet, trim parts, and weather stripping kit from Auto Krafters (New Market, Virginia).

Pro-Touring 1968 Coupe
Gillis Performance Restorations
This bright red 1968 Mustang coupe from Gillis Performance Restorations out of Port Richey is a show-stopper painted SPI Red with 6 coats of clear. Not only is it pretty, powering the beast is a 4.6L SOHC engine from a 1966 Thunderbird with an AOD and a wiring harness from Ron Francis.
The narrowed 9-inch rear came from a ’69 Galaxie and the front and rear suspension is from Rod & Custom. Stopping power is provided by Baer brakes.
The fenders are flared and the drip rails have been removed. Other body modifications include a Shelby deck lid and end caps with a custom-built front nose with a spoiler and headlight buckets bonded to the fender.
Dakota Digital gauges are installed on the Mustang, which will be featured in an upcoming story.
1967 Fairlane Super Stocker
Gillis Performance Restorations
Here is another project from Gillis Performance Restorations in Port Richey, a 1967 Fairlane Super Stocker, which is also painted SPI Red just like the 1968 Mustang coupe. The roll cage is the work of Chris Alston’s Chassisworks. The FE engine still needs to be determined, but will hook up to Hooker headers.
The project is mini-tubbed with a Crites leaf spring relocation kit. It features an Opentracker roller bearing front suspension with Calvert shocks and CalTrack traction bars and leaf springs.
Also included on the project is a Strange master cylinder, Hurst line lock, JPT C-4 transmission and converter, Turbo Action shifter, Wilwood brakes, and a narrowed 9-inch rear.
1965 Mustang “Blizzard”
Here is a new Ring Brother’s ride that will grace the showroom floor, a 1965 Mustang dubbed “Blizzard.” We wouldn’t expect anything less from these brothers, Jim and Mark Ring. They are well-known for their insane builds that usually sit perfectly on the SEMA showroom floor. With a shop based out of Wisconsin, folks look forward to SEMA to see just what these guys have up their sleeves.
Not much is known about the new project, but we know that it will generate an impressive 710hp from a NASCAR Sprint Cup V-8 engine. The rendering shows the car painted white with black and red racing stripes, a carbon-fiber hood, roof, and front spoiler. Unique wheels will help set off the exterior with the large brake calipers painted red.

1965 Ford Mustang
Precision Restorations is building a 1965 Ford Mustang fastback for one of its customers. Usually they tend to restore one thing at a time such as mechanical issues, or restoring the interior or paint. But this time around, they are restoring an entire 1965 Ford Mustang.
First things first, and that is the body and paint in this case. The paint is a house brand of Spies Hecker paint. That means a complete disassembly of the vehicle is needed, removing all the trim, bumpers, lights, glass door, weather stripping, to get the car down to the bare bones.
Ensuring that no cancerous rust is present that could pop up and pose a problem later down the road, rusted areas will be removed and replaced with good metal.
For the engine bay, a crate engine complete with a supercharger connects to a six-speed transmission and custom shifter. Also, rewiring the car is necessary, plus new steering, suspension, and brakes.
New fuel lines, brake lines, power front disc brakes, and an aftermarket tilt steering column have been installed. The rear end was replaced as well as huge drag tires, custom fuel cell and updating the electronic ignition to MSD components, and last but not least, a new digital dash.
