1991 Ford Mustang GT - A Work In Progress
Michael Boehm's '91 Cobra lookalike has been a 17-year evolution…and he's not finished yet.
When Mike Boehm of Spring, Texas, followed his brother Joseph into the Mustang world in the '90s, he didn't realize what he was getting himself into. But after nearly two decades of involvement, Mike is thankful for his brother's lead—and for good reason. His silver Fox is one of the cleanest around, and is a contender both on the street and on track.
"My brother Joseph got me involved in Mustangs. His help and guidance has helped me greatly," says Mike. When he bought the hatch, it was a basically stock GT. "I purchased the car in 1995 from a used car lot. It started off as a 13-second street car and slowly turned into a work in progress. Every time I go out to the track, I'm looking to go faster and quicker."
But he hasn't just thrown parts at it to meet his goals. Mike has meticulously picked a combination of parts to help his Mustang find that perfect balance between a race car and a street car—the essence of True Street. Which is how we found him and his clean Fox at the NMRA Lone Star Shootout in Texas.
Some of the core components that Mike chose include a Bennett-built 331ci short-block with forged internals, Trick Flow Specialties Twisted Wedge heads (2.02/1.60), and a custom Bennett Racing camshaft. He backed that with a C-4 built by Lovelady in Houston, Texas.
Providing 23 pounds of boost is a Vortech V-7 YSi centrifugal supercharger, an air-to-water intercooler, and custom tubing. Fueling the combination is an Aeromotive fuel system providing 50 pounds of fuel pressure to 83-lb/hr injectors. A FAST XFI controls operations, and ignition in handled by an MSD Digital 6 box.
Mike's hatch has been as quick as 10.12 at 138 mph with a 1.55 60-ft in street-legal trim. But he's not stopping there. "I would like someday to take the overall winner position in True Street," says Mike. "The car is always a work in progress and will probably never be finished.
"I enjoy driving the car and although it may not be the quickest or fastest car out there, it's still the car I built."
