This 1969 Mustang Mach 1 has been hidden since 1980
Vietnam Vet’s Mach 1: Parked since 1980, this 1969 Mach 1 is getting another life
When Rick Parker got a lead on an original-owner 1969 Mach, 1 he didn’t hesitate. That evening, he loaded up and took off for Lancaster, Ohio, an hour’s drive north of his shop Signature Autos (home of Bosscars.com) in Gahanna, Ohio, which is a suburb of Columbus.
Hunting classic Mustangs is business as usual around Rick’s shop, which started out as a place to do his hobby and has run wild with high-performance classic Mustangs and assorted Fords. On Monday, March 27, 2017, an old friend, George, stopped by Signature to dial Rick into the latest news on the Columbus Classic Mustang Grapevine. George had been talking to Jake, whose wife’s uncle was getting ready to sell his 1969 Mach 1, a car he had bought brand new. Rick is a serious collector, in addition to doing restorations for customers, so he called Jake. They agreed to meet at the uncle’s house that evening.
The owner was Steve Moyer, a Vietnam veteran who suffers from Agent Orange exposure, which has resulted in some difficulty talking and a struggle with health issues. He had purchased this 1969 Mach 1 brand new and drove it until 1980, when it was stored in a single-car garage. “I asked him why he had quit driving his car. He laughed and said it was terrible in the snow. He quit driving it because of the weather,” Rick says. Rick has helped us with more than a dozen Rare Finds in the past and agreed to snap pictures, after first okaying it with Steve. Apparently, animals had dragged corn into the trunk and ate their food in the car, leaving the bare cobs, but no worries.
Rick was delighted to be staring at an extremely complete and correct Mach 1 with no modifications. It had never having been messed with. According to Rick, the Mach 1 was a nice old car. The Acapulco Blue enamel was still mostly original. The SportsRoof body did display a little bit of rust in the normal areas of quarter panels and corners of doors. Inside, Rick spied a crack in the dash, but it had nice seat covers. Overall, the car was dirty from decades of storage and animal visits, but all that could be cleaned up. “Once we get it apart and clean it, I think we are going to be able to re-use and save a lot of it,” Rick says.
Under the hood is the stock 351 Windsor four barrel, which is engine code-M. Rick checked the shock towers were in good condition and found the original air cleaner and radiator. “There were no yellow sparkplug wires,” he says. The 351 appeared to have never been altered since it was new. “It appeared this car was owned by a man who probably loved his car for a long time. We’re chasing cars today that are missing everything, but there’s nothing missing on this car. This is going to be a great car to redo.”
Rick restores cars for a living for customers and builds cars for his own collection. He is not afraid to tell a seller how nice his or her car is, which makes the buying experience all the more cordial. “I asked Jake if Steve had a price on his car yet,” Rick says. “And he said the owner was looking for offers.” So I told him I’m willing to make an offer right now. I made one. Jake went back inside the house to talk to Steve and came right back out five minutes later. Done deal, he’ll take it.’”
