Royal Maroon Time Machine

Mike Murdock of Orange County, California, has fond memories from his high school and college years and this ’69 SportsRoof pushes all the right buttons on his way-back machine. A Southern California car all its life, Mike purchased it in the fall of 2012 from a couple whom recently had twins and needed the money more than a vintage Mustang. Mike is the third owner of the Royal Maroon with black interior Mustang and has added an AOD four-speed overdrive automatic, Hooker Headers, a Holley 670-cfm Street Avenger carb, and Flowmaster exhaust to the 351W underhood. While Mike isn’t much for car shows, he does enjoy giving the SportsRoof a “lil rip” on the weekends and seeing people’s heads turn.

Feeling the Fever

After restoring a couple of ’72 Mustangs, first a convertible and then later on a SportsRoof, John Hillard of Schertx, Texas, sold both ’72s to a married couple so that he could purchase the ’69 SportsRoof you see here. The “jewel,” as John calls it, was located in Springfield, Missouri, and matches his year of birth. It wasn’t long after that John’s wife got Mustang fever and had to have one of her own. The ’14 Grabber Green convertible is her daily driver. “She loves her mustang, but the classic always gets the attention,” John states. John tells us his two boys, Benjamin and Joseph, will get to enjoy the Mustangs for many years to come.

Beale Street Beauty

“I thought I would send some pictures of my ’68 Mustang fastback,” Tim Rishel of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, opened his email with after looking at his recent issue of Mustang Monthly’s Readers’ Album. Tim and a friend spent two years turning the fastback around to the presentable ride you see here. “Everything has either been replaced, repaired, or rechromed. It has a rebuilt 289 bored 0.030-inch over, a mild cam, a four-barrel carb, and a C4 transmission,” Tim states. Tim’s most recent bit of fun was following the MCA Pony Drive to Charlotte, joining up in Little Rock with the tour. The picture here was shot on famous Beale Street during the Memphis stop.

Wendy’s Birthday Ride

Matt Rowe’s wife, Wendy, was the lucky recipient of this ’64½ Mustang convertible for her 16th birthday. Wendy’s father loved Mustangs and wanted a ’65 fastback, but when he stumbled upon this convertible deal it was too good to pass up. He justified the purchase to his wife by saying it was going to be Wendy’s birthday gift! All through high school Wendy drove her convertible; top down and blond hair blowing in the wind. Wendy parked the Mustang during college and during that time her father tinkered with it, hoping to restore the Mustang for her. Unfortunately the Mustang sat due to an illness that her father would eventually succumb to. After completing her Master’s degree Wendy vowed to restore the Mustang, just like her dad wanted. Today Matt and Wendy live in San Diego, California, where the convertible still gets plenty of attention when the couple takes it out for a cruise.
