It's not often that the same feature car appears in 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords twice. It's extremely rare. As a matter of fact, it happens about as often as Editor Turner drives his Shelby to the office. That is to say it happens, but the planets really must be aligned.

When I pull into the office parking lot, and see a covered-up Shelby, it's a whoa! moment. For Turner to drive the PVT to work, there must be absolute zero chance of rain, and for us to run a feature car in the magazine again, it must have changed significantly.

So, before we go even further, dig into your back issues and pull out the Nov. '08 edition. On your way back to the bathroom, yell this to your significant other: “See—this is why I keep all those magazines!” Now turn to page 50, and you'll see Jesse Humbles' '93 LX (“Humble Hatch”) in it's previous iteration. Now put down that edition, and look back at this one. Yep, same car.

That's the great thing about Mustangs. When you get bored of one iteration, you can change it up, totally reinventing the car's personality. In it's prior incarnation, Jesse's LX was a drag-oriented car. It boasted Weld big n' littles, race bucket seats, drag brakes, 4.30 gears, a spool, and the like.

Before making its first appearance in our pages, Jesse's LX started out as a red '93 LX hatch that he bought from the original owner. Jesse was a hungry 19-year-old at the time of purchase. Naturally he treated the car to the usual bolt-ons. Eventually, he was able to work its way up to feature car status. After that, he wanted to change it up a bit. For most of us that would involve selling said Mustang and buying a new one. Jesse didn't have to sell his LX to do something different. He took his existing car completely changed it.

It all started when he came across a good deal on a Cervini's Auto Designs' '93 Cobra ground-effects kit and a batch of Mystichrome paint. With those two acquisitions, Jesse put the recipe in the oven. “The transformation began again,” Jesse says in reference to the car's rejuvenation.

When Jesse’s LX ran in the Dec, ’08 issue, the car’s insides had a distinctive drag theme. This time around, however, the car has returned to its street roots. Stock seats were put back into service to make street drives a bit more comfortable, and those homely lookin’ floor mats were replaced with Cobra-themed units, thankfully. Jesse also removed a gauge pod to make the interior appear more innocent, if you will. We’re sure those Flowmaster one-chamber mufflers let everyone know this car is far from it.

This time around he wanted a street car. Out came the drag seats and back in went the stock interior.

For a clean look, he removed all the emblems and the antenna. He revamped the suspension for a more compliant ride, swapped the stock brakes in favor of Cobra binders, and added a street-friendly set of Saleen SC replica wheels. He didn't totally leave straight-line traction behind, however. Hoosier drag radials remain out back.

The 347 that was in the car in the Nov. ’08 issue is still there. (And they say a 347 won’t last!) Jesse worked with Shivley Speed Machine on the stroker using Eagle and JE rotating assembly pieces, while a pair of AirFlow Research 185cc boast that company’s Outlaw Port procedure. An Edelbrock RPM II intake inhales via an Anderson Ford Motorsport Power Pipe according to the movements of a Comp Cams custom hydraulic-roller camshaft. The 347 boasts a rough and ready 11.7:1 compression ratio, and north of 400 horsepower at the feet. As we write this, the engine compartment is being smoothed and painted to match the exterior. the roucous 347 still resides under the Cervini’s cowl hood, with non-HOA-approved Flowmaster one-chamber mufflers and turndowns.

Speaking of the backside, the 4.30 gear'd and spool'd 8.8 made way for a less-rowdy 8.8 with 3.55 gears, a Ford Traction-Lok differential, and stock axles. We're sure that calmed the car down a little, but the raucous 347 still resides under the Cervini's cowl hood, with non-HOA-approved Flowmaster one-chamber mufflers and turndowns. We're sure Jesse's neighbors still hate the car, even in this form.

They might not be happy he went back for seconds, but we have to say that we enjoyed our second trip with this car.
