1967 Ford Mustang Coupe - The Underdog
This built-at-home coupe challenges the popular fastback for design superiority
The Mustang fastback has long been the favorite among Mustang models, but this finely detailed Mustang coupe might just turn the tides.
Racers at the beginning of Mustang's history knew right from the get go that the lighter/cheaper coupe model was the way to go, but as the years have come and gone, it's the fastback model that most people adore these days. Not Murrieta, California's Chad Ault.
For this aviation contractor who builds and tests engines for Marine Corp. F-18s, it was all of the fastback fervor that turned him away from that body style and gave him the impetus to build a coupe that could turn just as many heads. Challenge accepted.
Jaded by the Eleanor Mustang look of recent times, Chad embarked on an automotive journey with a more European influence. Starting with an eBay purchase out of Las Vegas, Nevada, Chad realized what looked like a decent car online was a "total mess" once it was delivered. The floor panels were rusted and the vinyl top that it once wore permanently damaged the roof.
After finding a good roof to weld onto the car, Chad also replaced the doorskins, the floors, and all of the rear sheetmetal. Forty-year-old glass was not going to cut it on a restomodifcation of this magnitude, so Chad replaced all of the windows as well.
To customize the Mustang a bit, Chad added a fiberglass G.T. 500-style hood, aftermarket front fiberglass front valance, and a custom grille treatment up front. Both front and rear bumpers were smoothed and painted body color, and Chad grafted in the California Special fiberglass rear spoiler into the rear of the car.
Like the outside of the car, the engine bay was also filled, smoothed, and painted body color. And much like the metal finishes in the engine bay, the exterior trim was given a brushed or matte finish to tone things down a bit.
Despite the bright and shiny white painted finishes in the interior, the rest of the cabin received the brushed/matte treatment with regard to the tasteful application of billet and cast aluminum trim.
Just like the upgraded leather front bucket seats, the drivetrain has been modified to follow current trends, including the 408-cubic-inch Windsor engine equipped with free-breathing Trick Flow Specialties aluminum cylinder heads and Comp Cams hydraulic roller camshaft, as well as the Tremec TKO 600 five-speed manual gearbox. Likewise the suspension benefits from late-model, aftermarket SN-95 Mustang components up front and a custom four-link out back.
Chad tells us he worked on the bodywork alone for a solid year, and performed all of the work, right down to the paint, in his home garage.
The resulting project caught the attention of our West Coast shooter, Cesar Andre, and apparently a good bit of bidder interest at the Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas auction of 2013. There, Lot 727 fetched a hefty $60,500; quite the princely sum for a coupe that wasn't an original Trans-Am car with racing heritage.
