It’s been three years since we first learned about Jason Engel and his Classic Recreations’ Shelby G.T. 500CR, a modern take on the legendary ’67 Shelby G.T. 500. His formula was simple: Completely restore ’67-’68 Mustang fastbacks with the appearance of a ’67 Shelby while also adding some of the best Eleanor bits (notably, side exhaust and C-pillar fuel filler) and updating the whole she-bang with modern updates like fuel-injection, air-conditioning, and coil-over front suspension. The package found appeal with affluent enthusiasts who wanted the nostalgia of owning a vintage Shelby without the hassles of driving and maintaining an old car.

Now Engel has expanded his line-up with the addition of a Shelby G.T. 350CR, basically taking the same G.T. 500CR formula and mixing it into a ’65-’66 Mustang fastback. Like the previous CR cars, each build starts with a real Mustang fastback body, with Engel explaining that cars with original VINs should hold their value better than if they were built on a replacement body. In fact, Classic Recreations’ first G.T. 350CR, seen here, started life as 5F09C636582, a basic 289 two-barrel fastback.

At the Classic Recreations’ facility in Yukon, Oklahoma, the bodies are disassembled and media blasted before being rebuilt with replacement sheetmetal and the obligatory Shelby items like an R-Model front apron, fiberglass hood with scoop, and rear brake cooling scoops. To that palette, Engle adds the best of the modern aftermarket, including Mass Flo fuel-injection (with a chrome air cleaner to maintain the vintage look), Tremec five-speed manual transmission, Shelby/Wilwood four-piston disc brakes, power rack-and-pinion steering, and coil-over front suspension. Likewise, the interior retains the classic look but add comfort and convenience with Carroll Shelby Scat series high-back bucket seats, Old Air Products’ air-conditioning, and Pioneer CD stereo with a four-channel amplifier and coaxial speakers.

Power comes from a 545-horsepower stroker small-block that measures 427 cubic-inches, something that wasn’t possible in 1965. Neither was nitrous, which is part of the prototype’s package. Powertrain options go all the way up to a supercharger with intercooler (745 hp) or a twin-turbocharger set-up for 1,000 hp.

Last year, we spent a day with a G.T 500CR (see “Shock and Awe” in the April 2012 issue) and came away impressed with the car’s performance and quality. The paint and attention to detail are show quality, a trait we trust will be passed along to the new G.T. 350CR.

Produced under a licensing agreement by Shelby Licensing, the G.T. 350CRs will be listed in the Shelby Registry. Only 10 will be built each year at $119,000, plus options.
