The 6th Annual NMRA Ford Nationals, sponsored by Downs Ford Motorsports, kicked off last August at Atco Raceway in Atco, New Jersey. The beautiful weather held out for the entire weekend, giving the record crowd plenty of action both on the track and at the Laurel Mountain Mustang All-Ford Auto Show. While Atco's NMRA event is usually known for sweltering heat, this year's event was a pleasant change for racers, show attendees, and spectators.

We were lucky to have freelancer Paul Rosner cover our bases with his trusty digital SLR. So check out the coverage and come back for the final two events of the series in upcoming issues.

The Laurel Mountain Mustang All-Ford Auto Show featured a ton of cars from just about every decade over the past 60 years. Two clean examples of '60s Ford (and Mercury) power included James Clour's '67 Fairlane GT hardtop and his friend David Garron's '67 Cougar GT hardtop. James' Fairlane sports FE power with 390 ci under the hood, backed by a trusty Top Loader four-speed. With the help of some Edelbrock goodies (cam, intake, and carb) and worked iron heads, James' Fairlane has seen 12.50s at 105 mph on the quarter-mile. David's Cat shares a similar driveline with another 390 FE, though he uses a Comp Cam, an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, and a 780-cfm Demon carb. His trans is a C6, and he's right at James' back door with his own 12.55 at 107 mph.

Kenneth E. Hollingsworth, '63 1/2 Galaxie 500XL Fastback
It would take half of our pages to list all of the modifications to Kenneth's Galaxie. Let's just say everything but the kitchen sink is on this fine show car. Kenneth's father ordered this R-code brand-new in 1963, and we're sure he had plenty of fun on the street with its 425 hp. Kenneth took possession of the Galaxie at just 16 years of age (imagine driving this big-block beast to high school in 1969!).

After owning the car all these years, Kenneth decided to change things up a bit with a full professional build by Superior Autoworks in Frederica, Delaware. The Galaxie now features a fabricated front clip with a Heidt's Superide II IFS tubular suspension and coilover setup and a Flaming River manual rack-and-pinion steering. Out back is a Heidt's four-link setup with a Panhard bar with a narrowed 9-inch rear hanging from it. The 3.50 gears are wrapped around an Auburn Posi in the aluminum centersection. The Galaxie rides on Budnik Gasser wheels, 18x8s front and 18x10s rear (inside is a matching Budnik Gasser steering wheel). Inside those killer wheels you'll find Baer PRO+ four-wheel discs, including four-piston Alcons up front.

The horsepower concerto under the hood has only improved with time, as Kenneth had the original R-code 427 block poked and stroked to 484 cubes by Southern Automotive in McDonough, Georgia. The engine makes an estimated 575 hp. To get these numbers, Kenneth used a Scat forged crank, H-beam rods, 10:1 forged slugs, a custom flat-tappet solid lifter cam, Edelbrock Performer RPM FE heads (ported, competition valve job), a polished medium-riser 2x4 manifold, and the original 590-cfm carbs rebuilt to the current engine specs and fully detailed.

The Galaxie's interior and exterior weren't neglected, either. The fastback now wears DuPont Hot Hues Tri-Coat Pearl paint. Galaxie Blue base, Blue Pearl midcoat (three coats of each), and seven coats of clear make the body shine. You probably noticed the body is far from stock, with a frenched third brake light, chromed exterior trim, rear-brake cooling ducts, and more. The interior has all the right touches as well with matching blue trim, off-white leather seating, Auto Meter Ultra-Lite carbon-fiber gauges (including a custom motorized dash pod), custom harnesses, and over a 1,000 watts of custom audio. This is one Galaxie that's truly out of this world.
