2013 NMRA Event Season Preview
Excitement builds as we gear up for the '13 NMRA keystone Ford Nationals Tour
Focus… that is the theme for the NMRA Ford Nationals 15th Anniversary Tour as special events dominate the 2013 racing schedule. The #1 all-Ford show in the U.S. features a tighter schedule, more heads-up racing, and exciting special events. Over 4,000 racers and car show participants will compete for national bragging rights and the richest purse and contingency program of any Ford-only series.
Just weeks away is the NMRA season opener, the 19th Annual Nitto Tire NMRA Spring Break Shootout held March 7-10 at Bradenton Motorsports Park (Bradenton, Florida). The SBS kicks off on Thursday, March 7, at a special Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords Open House, held at the magazine headquarters in Tampa. This free event will feature free a parts raffle, facility tour, food and drinks, music, hot MM&FF girls, and much more. For more information, log on to www.musclemustangfastfords.com or follow MM&FF on Facebook.
The NMRA season goes live on Friday, March 8, followed by a traditional kick-off party at Hooters of Bradenton with wild antics and famous Hooters girls. Highlights of the NMRA event include amazing heads-up action and 100-plus cars in TREMEC True Street, with a qualified field in the Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords Spring Break Shootout class on Sunday. Adding a unique flare is a special Cobra Jet Showdown presented by Ford Racing, featuring factory-built hot rods in an 8- and 9-second slugfest.
A little over a month later the NMRA series hits the Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Georgia, on April 11-14 for the 5th Annual Nitto Tire NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals. NMRA and NMCA racers let loose in one of the largest musclecar events of the year. Be part of the 15,000 fans sitting in the Atlanta Dragway stands watching the explosive head-to-head action. We call it the All-Star Nationals because of the record-breaking performances, and it attracts all the cars and stars of street-legal drag racing are at one exciting event.
Next the NMRA pays tribute to Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT), which is celebrating it 20th anniversary, and hosting the NMRA event and SVT tribute is none other than the stunning Maryland International Raceway (MIR) in Mechanicsville. Keep the weekend of May 3-5 open, especially if you are an SVT fanatic. This SVT specialty-event-within-an-event features several SVT racing and show categories. As a bonus, most SVT racers will receive a free secondary race entry (True Street or NMRA Brackets).
First on the SVT list is the VMP Tuning Terminator versus Shelby GT500 Shootout, where bragging rights will be settled. The SVT Lightning truck community is one of the most exciting SVT brands, as evidenced by the sheer number of trucks still being modified and turned into dragstrip haulers. Lightning racers are invited to join the popular Truck & Lightning category where they can race alongside legends like Johnny Lightning in his supercharged truck.
Tremec True Street, presented by Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords, is always one of the largest classes run on Saturday at each NMRA event. There will be a separate SVT-only True Street class (’93-to-present SVT cars and trucks only) with its own cash and prizes. SVT True Street racers will make three consecutive passes down the quarter-mile—$250 plus a 6-foot trophy will be awarded to the overall fastest, and $100 and a plaque will be awarded to each racer with the closest average to 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 seconds!
NMRA and its racers head to a new venue in 2013, thrilling Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. The weekend of June 14-16 has been reserved for this all-Ford extravaganza, and Norwalk will play host to two exciting affairs. First is the official Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords 25th Anniversary Party, where we’ll all celebrate a quarter decade of MM&FF magazine on the quarter-mile with special guests and party plans for this birthday bash. Also scheduled for the Norwalk blowout is a 5.0 Mustang Shootout that brings the world’s quickest ’11-’13 Mustang 5.0L drag racing machines on track for pride and glory. Nitrous, supercharged, and turbocharged 5.0-powered modern Mustangs will set records, with the hottest 5.0L tuner shops leading the charge. Do you have the quickest 5.0 Mustang in America? Join the fun and find out.
The NMRA and NMCA series are brought together again at Route 66 Raceway (Joliet, Illinois) in a four-day bash July 11-14. The Super Bowl of Street-Legal Drag Racing puts both series head-to-head in a special Shootout, where the NMRA class winners compete against their NMCA rivals for bonus cash and a chance to take home a world famous Nitto Tire Diamond Tree Super Bowl Ring. The diamond-laden ring is a special design exclusively for the Super Bowl of Street-Legal Drag Racing shootout. Team NMRA has been dominating this event with 5 team wins in the first 7 NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl events. Will the NMRA dominance continue on street-legal drag racing’s biggest stage?
The 15th Annual Nitto Tire NMRA All-Ford World Finals will invade Beech Bend Raceway October 3-6. The NMRA World Finals is special—not just because it’s the largest all-Ford event of the year, but because championships are on the line and racers leave nothing to chance. World championships and world records are a big part of the NMRA World Finals as racers put in their final effort to win the exclusive Nitto Tire Diamond Tree Championship Rings.
The Tremec True Street class, presented by Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords, has averaged well over 100 competitors the past two years and is a testimonial to the crazy street-legal performance that’s possible with Mustangs and Fords. This 2013 event will also bring together 10 of the most powerful, well-engineered, and gorgeous Mustangs from around the United States to participate in 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords’ King of the Street competition. The NMRA World Finals will showcase a special VMP Tuning Terminator/GT500 Shootout as well, in which the fastest ’03/’04 Cobras and GT500s will race against each other for year-long bragging rights.
Each NMRA national event also features a huge UPR Products All-Ford Car Show, where you will see a sea of color as hundreds of Blue Oval car show participants shine up and show off their awesome late-model and early Mustangs and Fords. Magazine editors will be drooling as they search for cover cars and features amongst rows of stock and modified show cars.
All NMRA events also feature the largest all-Ford manufacturers midways and swap meets of the year. Be sure to hit the ATM on the way to any NMRA event so you can bring home great deals on the parts you need. Finally… hang on to your seats for flame-throwing 300-plus-mph jet car exhibitions and the world famous NMRA burnout contest. Past participants have gone as far as blowing tires and destroying engines for the roar of NMRA’s crowd!
2013 NMRA Race Classes
Afco Street Outlaw
Street Outlaw is new for 2013 and will showcase a variety of 7-second machines running on slicks or drag radials. Rules allow for small-blocks and-big blocks, naturally aspirated small- and big-blocks, or single-power-adder vehicles using DOT 275/60-15 radial or true 28x10.5 slicks. All engine types are permitted a maximum of 588 ci. Power-adder options range from a single 94mm turbo, two supercharged combinations using the Procharger F1-X and XB-105, nitrous small-blocks with multiple guns, and nitrous big-blocks with a maximum of two stages. With low-7-second e.t.’s and speeds closing in on 200 mph, this will be the fastest and most exciting class in 2013.
Small-block Ford engines, combined with nitrous oxide injection or a supercharger and a small tire is a recipe for great racing. These mid-8-second Mustangs make up Renegade. With a max cubic inch limit of 410 and a single-power adder, racers are given weight breaks based on their combination to keep the playing field even.
Nitto Tire Factory Stock
Nitto Tire Factory Stock is an affordable way to race for an NMRA championship. Drivers can run '79-newer Mustangs and Fords with a 302- or 4.6L-based bullet no larger than 313ci. With high 10-second performance at an affordable cost, Factory Stock is a great way to get into heads-up racing.
Strange Engineering Coyote Stock
Equalizing the competition with sealed crate engines and electronics is what Strange Engineering Coyote Stock is all about. Open to any '54-and-newer Ford body, competitors must use a specific Ford Racing Performance Parts 5.0-liter Coyote crate engine. Coyote Stock is entering its second season and we look for this to be one of the most competitive NMRA classes in 2013.
Roush Performance Super Stang
If you have an '05-present Mustang, Roush Performance Parts Super Stang is for you. This bracket-style class is only for S197 Mustangs powered by 4.6L, 5.0L, 5.4L, and V-6 engines. Qualifying is based on reaction time and dial-ins are set 0.1 quicker than each racer's best qualifying run. With a variety of combinations and modifications allowed, Super Stang offers a wide range of performance levels and close racing.
Detroit Locker Truck & Lightning
Detroit Locker Truck and Lightning class is one of the NMRA's most popular categories. It's open to any Ford truck or SUV running a Ford powerplant. Qualifying is based on reaction time and dial-ins are set 0.1 quicker than your best qualifying run.
Exedy Racing Clutch Modular Muscle
Modular Muscle is a bracket-style class for Ford vehicle running a 4.6L, 5.0L, 5.4L, or V-10 modular engine. Qualifying is based on reaction time and the field is based on an NHRA Sportsman ladder. This all-run field is automatically dialed in 0.1 quicker than their fastest qualifying run and only e.t.s between 8.80 and 15.70 are allowed to compete.
Open Comp is open to any year, make, or model Ford-powered vehicle. Qualifying is based on reaction time, and dial-ins are set 0.1 quicker than your best qualifying time. If you've bracket raced and are looking to compete at an NMRA event, Open Comp may be the perfect fit.
Terminator/GT500 Shootout Class (MD and KY events only)
The Terminator/GT500 Shootout class brings together some of the quickest Cobras and GT500s in the U.S. in a winner-take-all format. If you ever wondered what the quickest SVT product is, this is the event for you. Each Terminator/GT500 Shootout participant at the Maryland event will also receive a free entry into Saturday's SVT Muscle True Street class (must fit True Street rules).
Race Pages Bracket Showdown
Race Pages Bracket Showdown is open to all Ford-powered or Ford-bodied vehicles. Bracket Showdown is broken up into B-I, B-II, and B-III, which give racers three levels of competition ranging for all-out racecars to streetcars. Bracket classes are run each day at NMRA events.
Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords Presents Tremec Transmissions True Street
True Street is the longest-running heads-up Mustang class and arguably the most popular. True Street was created in 1993 by the MM&FF staff to represent true street/strip Ford vehicles, and we've worked diligently to ensure this class has grown over the years. Though not a points-based or championship-eligible class, it has a huge following thanks to the prestige, prizes, and pure fun of participating.
While it is common to see some competitors in the 8s, True Street is actually geared toward the “regular” guy or gal, as you don't need a specialized combination to be competitive. The class attracts local drivers and is open to non-members of NMRA. It's open to '64-to-present Ford vehicles powered by Ford-based engines, and each vehicle must be able to drive over 30 miles on the street. All vehicles must be registered, licensed, and insured, and any number or type of power adders are permitted. Tires must be DOT-approved and windows must be functional.
After all the cars pass tech inspection, the drivers gather for a brief meeting to discuss rules and race procedures. Once all the cars are lined up and the hoods are closed, the pack is led on a 30-mile cruise on highway and city streets. Once the cruise begins, competitors are prohibited from opening their hoods until after the competition is complete. The cruise ends back at the track, where the cars are lined up in the staging lanes for a cool-down period. No refueling or tire changing is allowed, but competitors may replenish ice or water for intercoolers, install nitrous bottles, and/or adjust tire pressures.
Once racing begins, each competitor makes three back-to-back timed runs. Tire pressure may be lowered, but drivers cannot add air once they have made their first pass. Though racers compete side-by-side, drivers are only scored based on the average of their own three runs. The fastest average is the winner; second fastest is the runner-up. There are also awards presented for the fastest 9-, 10-, 11-, 12-, 13-, 14-, and 15-second averages.
